PREFACE.

THE Compiler of the following sheets, has been induced, by a long residence in the town of Framlingham, to take upon himself the character of becoming its historian; and from the conviction with which he is impressed, that there will be found much accuracy of research, fidelity of narration, and a variety of local information, alike interesting to the tourist, the biographer, and the antiquarian, he indulges in the hope that this fruit of his labours will be found not only rich with instruction and entertainment, but be considered so faithful a depository of past events, that it may serve the historian as his book of reference hereafter, and his richest store of materials that can be brought to bear upon the subject and its localities.

Time being the index and very essence of all events connected with the page of history, whether it relates to a kingdom, to an ancestry, or a town, the author's chief aim has been to collect and arrange every transaction which has come to light, respecting the old Castle and its once princely household, in strict chronological order, embodied with which, his readers will find many interesting and appropriate extracts from the Paston Correspondence, as edited by the late Sir John Fenn, which illustrate most forcibly the feudal splendour that prevailed in various modes and forms, within its still venerable walls.

In the parochial and miscellaneous portions of the history, he has been no less desirous of furnishing much new, and, he hopes, interesting matter, and trusts, that this, the first octavo volume which
