POETRY

FOR

CHILDREN,

SELECTED

By W. BURDON, A. M.

NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE

PRINTED BY K. ANDERSON, IN THE SIDE,

For T. Oftell, Bookfeller, Ave-Maria Lane, London.

[blocks in formation]

11

THE intention of this felection is, by means of the pieces it contains (most of which should be got by heart,) to form the minds of children to humanity and benevolence, and contribute to their general improvement; and, for this purpose, nothing is inferted which contains either words or ideas above their comprehenfion; for no error is more common, and yet more dangerous, than to teach children by rote what they cannot understand: the infant mind is thus oppreffed by a load of words, like feed which is fmothered by too great a weight of earth.

Morpeth, Feb. 2, 1805.
