The devil's pretending to raise up Samuel, 1 Sam. xxvii, proves nothing but that there was then such a gross error amang men, as to think that the Souls even of the best Saints were in the power of devils, and also at the black commands of the wordt of mankind. ver. A Christian therefore may not think it was Samuel that appear'd, but the familiar Spirit in his shape. Whereas it is said, When the Woman saw Samuel: And Saul perceived that it was Samuel: And Samuel faid: that is only according to the opinion of Saul and the witch; or according to the outward appearance, as the serpent is said to speak to, and deceive Eve, when it was the devil in the serpent. As to that Spirit's foretelling, he might easily perceive the overthrow of Saul, by his coming to him, and God's forsaking him. And Satan might have express leave from God to punish Saul and his army, as he had to affict Job.

They were Angels that carried Lazarus into Abraham's Bosom, to be sure not in the power of devils. Nor did they bring him into any place of comfort in hell; altho' the parable says that the rich man faw Abraham afar off, and that they (pake one to another. For parables are not to be taken ftri&tly according to the words, but according to the design of them. And the design of that parable is to shew the different condition of the righteous and the wicked after death: who we may be sure are not so near, as to sec or talk with one another. Luke viii. 31. ch. 16. 23. John v. 22. Mattb. vii. 21, 22, 23. When the wicked are brought out of hell, and placed on the left hand, they will then plainly fee that there is no pleading for mercy. Therefore, Many will say to me in that day, is to be understood of the day of death.
