tically proved to be the 'power of God unto salvation unto every one that believeth.' May the Lord continue abundantly to bless all the efforts of your Mission as He has done in the years that are past.

"When looking round on this poor, afflicted country, how much we feel that the same thing needs to be done for Jew, Greek, Moslem, Albanian, Armenian, Slav, and Druze; and constantly do we pray the Lord of the harvest to send forth labourers into His harvest."

WHAT? AND WHO SAYS IT?

"The relation between the Bedouin races of Israel, who are found in every country of the world, and the Celtic, Teutonic, and Sclavonic nations, who have between them appropriated Europe, will form hereafter one of the most remarkable chapters in the history of the world."--D'Israeli's Life of Lord George Bentinck.

There are two or three chapters in a book of Lord Beaconsfield's, printed many years since, that are so interesting in relation to his views of his own People that we think at the present crisis they cannot but be interesting to our readers; for as recent events concerning the acquisition of CYPRUS have led us to consider "WHAT? AND WHO DOES IT?" So, with regard to these remarks upon Israel, we must again ask the question, "WHAT? AND WHO SAYS IT?"

Lord Beaconsfield observes, in sequence to our MOTTO SEN

TENCE:

many

"The Celts and the Saxons have adopted most of the laws and of the customs of these Arabian tribes-all their literature and all their religion. The toiling multitude rest every seventh day by Jewish law. They perpetually read for their example the records of Jewish history and poetry. They daily acknow ledge on their knees that the only medium between the Creator and themselves is of Jewish race; and yet they treat that race with obloquy and persecution. That is a strange return to a part of the human family that has contributed so much to human happiness. It is alleged that this is in punishment for a great

crime, the crucifixion of Christ at their instigation. Nay, the deed was that of the Romans. Besides, at the advent of Christ the race of Israel were already largely dispersed, and had been for many centuries. Europe then, except the shores bathed by the Midland Sea, was a primeval forest; but in every Eastern city, and in every province of the Roman Empire, the Jews were settled-more Jews perhaps in Egypt than in Palestine, many in Rome, and the religion of Moses made proselytes undisturbed by the State.

"The Sacred Writings give evidence of this pre-dispersion. Also that not two months after the crucifixion, when the Third Person of the Trinity first descended on Jerusalem at the time of the Great Festival, when the Jews repaired to their central Holy place, there were gathered there Parthians, Medes, Elamites (see Acts ii. 9, 10, 11), all' Jews,' devout men out of every nation under heaven. And this race of Israel by no means all rejected Christ in Palestine. The reverse is the truth. But for them the good tidings of redemption would never have been known to the Northern and Western nations. The first preachers of the Gospel were of Israel, and none else. They were its first historians, and none else. No one ever wrote under the inspiration of the Holy Ghost except the men of Israel. They nursed the sacred flame of which they were hereditary depositaries; and when time was ripe it was not a Senator of Rome or a philosopher of Athens that was chosen as His messenger to the Gentiles by our Lord, but a Jew of Tarsus, he who founded the Seven Churches."

"In all the great cities of Europe and in some of Asia, among the infamous classes, will be found Jews. They are not the only usurers, gladiators, and followers of mean and scandalous occupations, nor are they the majority of such; but they contribute perhaps more than their proportion to the aggregate of the vile, for this is the law of persecuted races. The infamous is the business of the dishonoured.

"But other degraded races wear out and disappear; the Jew remains, as determined, as expert, and as persevering as ever. Only the greatest of races could have endured like this. The Jew has a material organization of the highest class, and then

he is sustained by a sublime religion; the patriarchal feeling still lingers about his own heart. Malignant and odious as he may appear abroad, a man who loves his home is never wholly lost. A Jew is never seen upon a scaffold except it is at an auto da fé. The world has discovered that it is impossible to destroy the Jews. Though attempts have been made on the largest scale by Egyptian Pharaohs, Assyrian kings, Roman emperors, Scandinavian crusaders, Gothic princes, holy inquisitors, all have tried in vain. Exile, captivity, torture, massacre, and degradation, all have been in vain. The Jews are as numerous as ever; as many or more in number as in the time of Solomon; found in all lands and prospering in all, because it is a law of nature that a superior race shall never be destroyed by an inferior.

"Greatness is not compassed by numbers, or the English would never have vanquished the Chinese; greatness consists in physical organization, energy, and enterprise, combined with strength of will and fertility of brain.

"Viewing the influence of the Jewish race on the modern communities, without reference to the past or future of Israel, instead of being the objects of aversion, they should be honoured and favoured among the Western races, as those who charm the public taste and elevate the public feeling; for they delight and ennoble Europe. They are the most admirable artists, the most entrancing singers, the most graceful dancers, the most exquisite musicians. The present age develops the beautiful most in music; the plastic arts flourished in earlier times. All in them is now mimetic, the skilful adaptation of old methods. The creative faculty of modern man is at present irresistibly at work on the virgin soil of science, finding out his command over nature, and multiplying the means of material happiness. The music of modern Europe ranks with the pictures and statues of Greece. And who are the great composers? Mozart, Meyerbeer, and Mendelssohn. How can the nation that yields to their spells, continue to persecute the Jews?

"Only forty years ago, the two races most dishonoured in Europe were the Attic race and the Hebrew; yet these two had done the most for mankind. Theirs were the two smallest

countries in the world, equally barren and equally famous; both nations were divided into tribes; both built a famous temple on an Acropolis; both produced a literature accepted by all European nations. Athens has been sacked oftener than Jerusalem, and oftener razed to the ground; but the Athenians escaped expatriation, which is purely an Oriental custom. The suffering of the Jew has been more prolonged and varied; but the Greek genius seems exhausted—the Hebrew never. Existing statesmen should ponder the esteem and gratitude due to the Hebrew.

"The Jews, besides their pride of blood, have a faculty of acquisition equally remarkable. They accumulate wealth in defiance of restrictive laws; therefore, their tendency is conservative with regard to religion and property. Statesmen should make them their choice allies, but the fruit of their persecution has been that they are at the head of all Secret Societies, and the Chosen Race touches the hand of the scum of Europe. It is doubtless to be much deplored that several millions of this Race should persist in believing only a part of their religion, but it should be remembered that when Christianity was presented to their ancestors, it was in such a questionable shape-appearing to be a Gentile religion, accompanied by idolatrous practices, and holding up their people to scorn and hatred, and this was not the way to make converts. Christianity must have appeared to them a religion of fire and sword; one of whose first duties it seemed to be to avenge some crime of ages old in Jerusalem, from which their ancestors perhaps had emigrated long before it occurred The origin of the colonies of Jews in Spain is lost in the night of time; they had been settled there beyond the memory of Cicero. If the Christians had been more humane in their behaviour to the Jews, the latter might have had opportunity to ponder Christianity, and the results might have been different. However presented to him, whether by Papists or by Protestants, it cannot be repugnant to the feelings of a Jew to be told that the Mediator of the Human race was a child of Israel, or that "a Jewess is the queen of heaven." The pupil of Moses might be led to ask himself whether the Prince crucified on Calvary has not done more

for Jews than all other princes of the house of David? Has not He made their history the most famous in the world? Has He not hung up their laws in every temple? Has He not vindicated all their wrongs, avenged the victory of Titus, and conquered the Caesars ?

"The wildest ambitions of their rabbins have been far exceeded. Has He not conquered Europe, and changed its name to Christendom? Jesus of Nazareth, the Son of the Most High God, should be the eternal glory of the Jewish race!

"The decline and disaster of modern communities has been generally in proportion to their sedition against Semitic principles. Since France revolted against the laws of the Old and New Testaments at the close of the last century, she has always vibrated between collapse and convulsion. England has always remembered Zion, and the great Trans-Atlantic Republic is intensely Semitic, and prospers accordingly. Spain declined from the day when, in a million families of Jews and Saracens, she expelled a Semitic population. The European communities must be governed either by traditionary influence or by military force; wherever there is a vast standing army the government must be that of the sword. England is the only important European community still governed by traditionary influences, and she alone preserves her order, honour, authority, and wealth. Some sigh for Trans-Atlantic liberty, but America is a colony still colonizing, and there is little analogy between her and us." Life of Lord George Bentinck, by Benjarain D'Israeli.

"For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there shall be earthquakes in divers places, and there shall be famines and troubles: these are the beginning of sorrows."-Mark xiii. 8.

THESE words were spoken by our Lord in his reply to the questions of four of his disciples, as to the signs of His coming, and of the end of the present Dispensation; and since we see so many of these events taking place before our eyes, it cannot
