I think this is the true reading; it may be understood as explained either by Steevens or Tollet." Ayshasos Telga (says Mr. Davies) the "unlaughing stone, is an old Greek proverb; and "dumb or dead as a stone is familiar, I should think, to most languages. Mr. Steevens's "conceit of the marble statue is more ingenious "than solid." Dram. Miscel. II.

I am not sure that the reading of the modern editors, inwhoop'd, is wrong.

That is, not heartily, he did from the teeth outwardly is a common expression, signifying that what is spoken does not come from the heart. Macbeth speaks of

Which the poor heart would fain deny and dare not.

I think Mr. Malone's remark is just; his conjecture is, perhaps, right.
