THOU, WHO WERT A LITTLE CHILD.

THOU, who wert a little child,
"Holy, harmless, undefiled,"
Send Thy Spirit from above;
Teach us little ones to love.
Shepherd of the chosen flock,
Lead us to the shadowing rock;
From temptation's noontide heat
Gently guide our erring feet.

Where the waters of Thy grace
Make a fertile pasture-place,
Where no deadly foe can come,
Let us find our quiet home.

Guide us by Thy staff and rod,
To our Father and our God;
Then conduct us, in Thy love,
To Thy better fold above.

THE LITTLE TEACHER.

A TEACHER asked one of his class, a boy of about twelve years of age, whether or not he had a Bible. The boy answered, "No, teacher, not yet; but I am paying in every week, and shall soon have it now; and then I shall pay for one for my grandmother, and after that one for my father."

"What!" said the teacher, "get a Bible for your grandmother before your father!"

"Yes," replied the boy, "for grandmother can read, and father cannot yet; but I teach him every night when he comes home from his work."

"Is he willing you should instruct him?" asked the teacher.

"Oh yes," said the boy, "he is never so well pleased as when I am teaching him; and I hope that by the time I have got him a Bible he will be able to read a chapter!"

THE WATER OF LIFE.

"If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of Him, and He would have given thee living water."-John iv. 10.

"IF thou knewest," little child, The gift that God has given, How fully would thy thirst for joy Be satisfied from heaven!

"If thou knewest," little child, That, sinful as thou art, Compassion fills His soul to thee, And tenderness His heart!

"If thou knewest," little child,

The pleasures of His love, Thy little heart would love to think

Of Him who is above;

Would think of Him who's seated there,

And hear His Gospel tell

How once, to show the way of life,
He sat beside the well.

And now His tender care's the same,
Who still is meek and mild,
He draws the living waters still,
And gives them to the child.

Drink, little sinner, freely drink-
These waters are for you;
The springs of life are ever fresh,
The wells of mercy new.

THE PHARISEE AND THE PUBLICAN.

AND he spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others :

Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican.

The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican.

I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess.

And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner.

I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.-LUKE Xviii. 9-14.

Pray then, pray then, little Christian,
Never, never cease to pray;
Pray for pardon, pray for blessing,
Pray for guidance day by day.
Render thanks for all the mercies
Which our Father sends to thee;
Most of all, for the dear Saviour
Who once died on Calvary.
Up and doing, little Christian,

Trust not to thyself alone;
But work out your own salvation

Through the grace of God's dear Son. Jesus loves you, little Christian;

Turn not from His love away, But go forth and do His bidding ; Up and doing, while 'tis day.

C. E. R. P.

THE GOLDEN TEXT.

"That every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father."-Phil. ii. II.

UP AND DOING.
Up and doing, little Christian,
Up and doing while 'tis day;
Do the work your Master gives you,
Do not loiter by the way;
For we all have work before us,
You, dear child, as well as I.
Let us seek to learn our duty,
And perform it cheerfully.

Up and doing, little Christian,
Gentle be, and ever kind;
Helpful to the loving mother,

E'en her slightest wishes mind.
Let the little children love you

For your care and pleasant play; And the feeble and the weakly,

Help them by your kindly way. Patience, patience, little Christian,

No cross look nor angry word; Follow Him who died to save you, Follow Jesus Christ our Lord. Help the suffering and needy,

Help the poor whom Jesus loves; Tell the sinner of the Saviour

CHRIST BOTH GOD AND MAN.

WHEN thou hearest of Christ, do not think Him God only, or man only, but both together. For I know Christ was hungry, and I know that with five loaves He fed five thousand men, besides women and children. I know Christ was thirsty, and I know Christ turned water into wine. I know Christ was carried in a ship, and I know Christ walked on the water. I know Christ died, and I know Christ raised the dead. I know Christ was set before Pilate, and I know Christ sits with the Father. I know Christ was worshipped by the angels, and I know Christ was stoned by the Jews. And truly some of these I ascribe to the human, others to the divine nature; for by reason of this, He is said to be both together.-St. Chrysostom.

LITTLE THINGS.
LOOK out upon the ocean,
The deep and mighty sea;
If it were not for its drops,
Where would its greatness be?
Look out upon the sand,

That checks the mighty deep:
Say, if its grains were gone,
Where would the billows sweep p?

Were little words despised,

How could a book appear? How could a preacher preach? Or how his hearers hear?

Despise not, then, the pence;

They serve to make the pound; And each may help to spread abroad

WHEN DAILY I KNEEL DOWN TO PRAY.

WHEN daily I kneel down to pray,

As I am taught to do,

God does not care for what I say

Unless I feel it too.

Yet foolish thoughts my heart beguile,

And when I pray or sing,

I'm often thinking all the while

About some other thing.

Some idle play or childish toy

Can send my thoughts abroad; Though this should be my greatest joy, To know and serve the Lord.

Oh, let me never, never dare

To act the trifler's part,

Or think that God will hear a prayer
That comes not from my heart.

But if I make His ways my choice,

As pious children do,

Then, while I seek Him with my voice,

My heart will love Him too.

LOVE TO GOD.

WHEN I look up to yonder sky,
So blue and bright, so wide and high,
I think of One I cannot see,
But One who sees and cares for me.

His name is God: He gave me birth,
And every living thing on earth;
And every tree and plant that grows,
To the same hand its being owes.

'Tis He my daily food provides,
And all that I require besides ;
And when I close my slumbering eye,
I sleep in peace, for He is nigh.

Then surely I should ever love
This gracious God who reigns above;
For very kind indeed is He,
To love a little child like me.

JESUS.

LET us sing to Jesus,

Let us bless His name ;

For to seek and save us, To our world He came.

Let us pray to Jesus

He will hear our cry,

And will send to help us, From His throne on high.

Let us all love Jesus,

For He loved us so,
That He died to save us
From our sin and woe.

Let us trust in Jesus-
He alone can save,
And He waits to give us
Life beyond the grave.

Let us follow Jesus,

In the path He trod; This will upward lead us,

To the throne of God. There we shall see Jesus,

Sitting on His throne; He will smile upon us, Calling us His own.

J. SHILLITO.

JESUS AT THE WELL.
Ar burning noon, with weary frame,
To "Jacob's Well" Emmanuel came;
No kings, in state, their visits paid,
Nor were the sick around Him laid.
No works of might could there be done,
No fame secured-no laurels won :
No crowds were there to learn His will,
And thus His highest joy fulfil.

But still, that hour He would not waste,
For, lo, one hearer comes in haste!
The precious truth He doth impart ;
Deeply His words affect her heart!

That well no more is in her mind,
Her pitcher, too, is left behind!
Swift hies she to the city's walls,
And thence the men to Christ she calls!
Now flow they forth, with rank on rank,
Where erst from Jacob's Well they drank;
But there to hear the Saviour speak,
And thence the "living waters" seek.

Thus, from the teachings of that hour,

Were many saved from Satan's power;
And all the world in some good measure

Has been enriched from that same treasure!
