MINING I.

1. (a) What are lodes, or metallic mineral bodies, composed of?

(b) Why are they so often found in a geologically disturbed district?

(c) Where do you think the lode material came from, in a general way, and how did it get into place?

2. Suppose you were prospecting for these minerals, at different times-placer gold, free gold in quartz, low grade sulphide deposits, bituminous coal-what indications or associations would you look for, and how would you proceed to examine (not develop) a find, in each case?

3. If you were instructed to develop as well as you could a promising prospect, with a few men in a few months, how would you go about it? and what equipment would you need? Choose your own conditions of ground and mineral lode.

4. Describe briefly the action, speed, feed, and control generally of a long distance percussion drill, and of a Diamond drill. Also say what are the chief uses and limitations of these two types of borers.

5. In some mines the hammer type of drill is used in preference to piston drills for some of the work. Why is this? Describe the tools and operation in one of these examples: Single jack; Hammer drill; Piston drill.

6. Draw a shaft heading or a tunnel heading which has been drilled ready for blasting-side and front views; and write notes upon the loading, shooting, and mucking, in one of these cases. Also draw a set of tunnel or a set of shaft timbers, neatly, in place.

7. Describe, with sketches, any stoping conditions you may choose.

8. What do you think are six important points in coal mining which distinguish it from metal mining?

Define these coal mining terms: Slope; gob; brattice room; fire damp; chain pillar.
