FACULTY OF ARTS (HONOURS).

INTRODUCTORY PHYSICAL CHEMISTRY.

1. Define: gram, absolute temperature, specific gravity, specific volume, gram equivalent, molecular heat.

2. Prove the gas equation PV=RT, assuming Boyle's and Charles' Laws. In what other units can R be expressed? 100 c.c. of gas are measured at -20° and 800 mm. pressure. What volume does the gas occupy at 500° and 760 mm.?

3. Give an account of the Atomic Theory and show the necessity for Avogadro's assumption to make the theory fit all the known facts.

4. Give a full description of Mendeleef's Periodic table.

5. State the law of mass action, and fully illustrate it by two examples. Explain why many reactions are said to be quantitative.

6. A tenth molar solution of ammonium hydroxide is 1.3% ionised, and 98.7% unionised. Calculate the concentrations of the different ions, and the ionisation constant for ammonium hydroxide. If this solution is diluted 100 times, what would be the concentration of the hydroxyl ion?

7. What is caisson disease, and what is it due to? What should be the effect of living under increased pressure, or of increasing the percentage of oxygen in air, on the life of a fish or mouse?

8. Explain what is meant by velocity of reaction, and show how it is dependent on temperature. Give examples.

FACULTIES OF ARTS AND APPLIED SCIENCE.

PRELIMINARY HONOURS.

ORGANIC CHEMISTRY.

(ORGANIC CHEMISTRY II).

1. (a) Give the structural formulae and names of the hydrocarbons of the diolefines, having five carbon atoms in the molecule.

(b) Outline the experimental proof of the structure of acetic acid.

2. (a) Outline the chemistry of aldehydes.

(b) Discuss and illustrate at length the effects produced in organic compounds by the introduction of positive and negative groups.

3. (a) Compare the aliphatic amines with the aromatic amines.

(b) Describe in detail the mechanism of the syntheses that can be accomplished by the use of ethylacetoacetate and its derivatives.

4. (a) Show the structural relations existing among d-glucose, d-fructose, canesugar, maltose.

(b) Give the mechanism of the reaction between diazonium compounds and water.

5. (a) Outline the condensations that can be accomplished by the use of benzaldehyde.

(b) Discuss the structure of uric acid. What are the relations existing among purine, xanthine, theobromine, caffeine?
