1. (a) Describe and contrast an early and a late liturgical play.

(b) Show by examination of particular plays the difference between a dramatic and an undramatic miracle play.

(c) Comment on the skill in plotting and in creating and maintaining suspense shown in The Shepherd's Play,

2. "Is it not passing brave to be a king?"

How far does this line represent the spirit of Marlowe's dramas?

Give some account of his life and his place in English literature.

3. Discuss Shelley's character. Compare it with that of Keats. How far is the temperament of the two men reflected in their poems?

4. (a) Comment on Jane Austen as a character-painter. Support your statements by illustrations.

(b) Discuss Scott's power as a "historical novelist," and his interest in psychological analysis of character. Compare him, in regard to these points, with any modern novelist.

5. (a) Discuss Doctor Johnson's character and his place in English literature.

(b) Comment on the life and poetry of either Burns or Pope.

6. Compare Carlyle's optimism, in its basis and its characteristics, with that of Emerson.

7. What is meant by Romanticism in literature? What phases of Romanticism are represented by Collins, Goldsmith, Blake, Byron, Wordsworth?

Write the answers to A and B in separate books. Approximately thirty-six minutes should be given to each of the five questions.

A.

1. Answer any two parts of this question.

(a) What new elements of thought and style did Donne bring into English poetry?

(b) Give the substance of Johnson's criticism of Lycidas, and state how far you agree with him.

(c) Of the two strains in The Faerie Queen, the puritan and the sensuous, which has had most influence, and which attracts you most?

(d) "Comus is the natural result of the dreaming scholarly years, which the young Puritan, Milton, passed at Horton, reading Spenser, Jonson, mediaeval romances, and the ancient classics." Discuss.

B.

2. (a) Give the main facts and dates in the life of Chaucer and describe his personal characteristics and appearance. Indicate the sources of your information.

(b) Sketch the history of the octosyllabic couplet in England from its beginning to the time of Chaucer and describe its development in Chaucer's hands.

3. (a) The date, authorship, and substance of the Roman de la Rose. Give a detailed account of its influence upon Chaucer's works.

(b) Write on any three of the following topics, illustrating freely: Courtly love in Chaucer's works; Chaucer's humour and lack of "high seriousness"; Chaucer's reading; Chaucer's view of life.
