CONSTRUCTION OF BRIDGE ACROSS MISSISSIPPI RIVER AT FORT SNELLING, MINNESOTA.

REPORT OF MAJ. FRANCIS R. SHUNK, CORPS OF ENGINEERS, OFFICER IN CHARGE, FOR THE FISCAL YEAR ENDING JUNE 30, 1909.

The approved project will be found in the Report of the Chief of Engineers for 1909, part 1, page 948.

The substructure was completed in October, 1908, when the erection of the superstructure was commenced. The superstructure was completed in February, 1909, and the bridge finished April 24, 1909. It was tested and accepted June 19, 1909.

Work on the grading of the approaches was commenced late in April, 1909, and has continued more or less irregularly, owing to the difficulty in obtaining materials and teams. The greater part of the drainage work is finished and the whole work is about 20 per cent completed.

RECONSTRUCTION OF UNITED STATES BRIDGE AT NIOBRARA,

NEBRASKA.

REPORT OF MAJ. EDWARD H. SCHULZ, CORPS OF ENGINEERS, FOR THE YEAR ENDING JUNE 30, 1909.

Funds for this work were appropriated by act of Congress approved April 30, 1908 (Public, No. 104), Indian appropriation act, as follows: For the purpose of rewooding and repiling the present old bridge across Niobrara River between the Santee and Ponca Reservations, Nebraska, supplying the same with new ice breaks, but using the iron work of the old combination bridge, the sum of twelve thousand dollars, or so much thereof as may be necessary, the work to be done under the direction and supervision of the War Department.

In accordance with approval of the Secretary of War July 6, 1908, the work was assigned to this office. Bids were invited and opened September 21, 1908, and contract awarded to the Western Bridge and Construction Company, of Omaha, Nebr.

This work was commenced January 11, 1909, and finished and accepted April 28, 1909.

A sketch showing location and skeleton elevation is herewith, marked "Plate 12."a
