2 In praise to Thee my heart I lift ; But, more than all Thy love has given, I bless Thee for the wondrous gift
Of Jesus Christ our Lord from heaven. 3 O may the Spirit from above,
Stoop down and make my heart His care; And shed abroad a Saviour's love,
And write His name and likeness there!
"God blessed for ever.-Amen,"
CREATOR, Redeemer, and Spirit of truth,
One God over all evermore,
In songs of thanksgiving let childhood and youth Extol Thee, and praise, and adore!
2 Thy power we behold in the works of Thine hand, The heavens Thy glory declare,
Thy providence rules over ocean and land, All creatures that live are Thy care.
3 Thy love, beyond thought, in the gospel we trace, The gift of all gifts is Thy Son,
Redeeming, restoring, and blessing our race, When fallen, condemned, and undone.
4 Thy kindness, long-suffering, and mercy to crown The heirs of salvation to seal,
To dwell in Thy people, the Spirit came down : His influence now may we feel!
5 The Father, the Son, and the Spirit of truth, One God over all evermore,
Let manhood and age join with childhood and
To honour, praise, love and adore!
"Joy shall be in heaven."
1 WHO can describe the joys that rise
Through all the courts of Paradise
To see a prodigal return,
To see an heir of glory born?
2 With joy the Father doth approve The fruit of His eternal love;
The Son with joy looks down and sees The purchase of His agonies.
3 The Spirit takes delight to view The holy soul He formed anew; And saints and angels join to sing The growing empire of their King.
"These Three are One." 1 JOHN V. 7.
God the Father, God the Son, And God the Spirit,-Three in One, Be honour, praise, and glory given, By all on earth, and all in heaven!
IVE to the Father praise;
Give glory to the Son:
And to the Spirit of His grace, Be equal honour done!
"Praise ye Him, all His hosts." PSALM CXlviii. 2.
PRAISE God from whom all blessings flow, Praise Him all creatures here below; Praise Him, above, ye heavenly host:- Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost!
SIN CONFESSED AND MERCY SOUGHT.
COME, my soul, thy suit prepare,
Jesus loves to answer prayer; He Himself has bid thee pray, Therefore will not say thee nay.
2 Thou art coming to a king: Large petitions with thee bring: For His grace and power are such, None can ever ask too much.
8 With my burden I begin : Lord, remove this load of sin: Let Thy blood, for sinners spilt, Set my conscience free from guilt.
4 Lord, I come to Thee for rest; Take possession of my breast; There Thy blood-bought right maintain, And without a rival reign.
While I am a pilgrim here, Let Thy love my spirit cheer;
As my Guide, my Guard, my Friend, Lead me to my journey's end.
6 Shew me what I have to do; Every hour my strength renew; Let me live a life of faith; Let me dio Thy people's death.
"Ye are bought with a price." 1 COR. vi. 20.
OUR heavenly Father!-we confess,
With grief and shame, our sin and guilt; Turn, Lord, from our unrighteousness, Look on Thy Son,-His blood was spilt.
2 He bore the chastening of Thy rod, That we might by His stripes be healed; He died for us, the Lamb of God; He rose, and our redemption sealed! 3 And shall we, dare we, can we still Resist Thy fear, Thy love despise ? No, take us,-soul, affection, will,- A free and living sacrifice!
"Mighty to save," ISAIAH lxiii. 1.
THOUGH we do amiss so often,
That we cannot count the times, Yet the Lord our hearts can soften, And can pardon all our crimes; For He sent His Son from heaven, Though He was the Lord above, That our sins might be forgiven, Out of His amazing love.
2 God could see from the beginning, All our evil work and ways; He could see us fond of sinning, And neglecting prayer and praise: So, to put new hearts within us, Jesus Christ, in pity, said,
He would come and die for sinners, And be punished in our stead.
3 O what mercy! O what kindness! Let us all repent and pray; For it would be wicked blindness Not to turn this very day!
Now we hope to be forgiven, Since our blessed Saviour died;
And we cannot get to heaven Any way at all beside.
"The darkness hideth not from Thee,"
ALMIGHTY God, Thy piercing eye
Strikes through the shades of night: And our most secret actions lie
All open to Thy sight.
2 There's not a sin that we commit, Nor wicked word we say,
But in Thy dreadful book 'tis writ, Against the judgment day.
3 And must the crimes that I have done Be read and published there? Be all exposed before the sun, While men and angels hear? 4 Lord, at Thy feet ashamed I lie, Upward I dare not look; Pardon my sins before I die, And blot them from Thy book.
5 Remember all His dying pains- The blood my Saviour spilt;
O may that blood wash out my stains, And answer for my guilt!
"I am poor and needy." PSALM XI. 17.
WAS often told my need,
Still I knew not what it meant ;
But I feel it now indeed
Under it my heart is bent! I am guilty, therefore need An atonement for my guilt; To atone did Jesus bleed,- Sure for me that blood was spilt!
2 I am sinful, therefore need Grace to make my heart anew; Of the Spirit do I read,- Sure to me His pledge is true! I am foolish, therefore need Wisdom to direct my mind; Who for it in vain can plead? Sure in me a ray I find.
8 I am helpless, therefore need
Strength to bear me on my way: It hath raised the bruised reed,- Sure my strength is as my day;
I am wretched, therefore need Joys which earth cannot impart; All imaginings exceed,-
Sure no stranger knows my heart! 4 I am mortal, therefore need
Faith, with all its hopes, to die; Though the sentence be decreed,- Sure my spirit soars on high! I am needy, therefore need
More and more that need to know; As from pride my heart is freed, Sure I love this lying low!
which believe, He is precious." 1 PETER ii. 7.
NEED Thee, precious Jesus! For I am full of sin;
My soul is dark and guilty, My heart is dead within: I need the cleansing fountain. Where I can always flee,- The blood of Christ, most precious, The sinner's perfect plea.
2 I need Thee, precious Jesus! For I am very poor; A stranger and a pilgrim, With little earthly store I need the love of Jesus,
To cheer me on my way; To guide my doubting footsteps! To be my strength and stay.
8 I need Thee, precious Jesus! I need a Friend like Thee; A Friend to soothe and sympathize, A Friend to care for me: I need the heart of Jesus, To feel each anxious care: To bear my every burden, And all my sorrow share. 4 I need Thee, precious Jesus! For I am very blind;
A weak and foolish wanderer, Of dark and evil mind: I need the light of Jesus,
To tread the thorny road; To guide me safe to glory, Where I shall see my God.
