"This God is our God for ever."

THIS

PSALM xlviii. 14.

God is the God we adore,
Our faithful, unchangeable friend;
Whose love is as great as His power,
And neither knows measure nor end.
2 'Tis Jesus the First and the Last,

89

Whose Spirit shall guide us safe home:
We'll praise Him for all that is past,
And trust Him for all that's to come.

"Men shall be blessed in Him;"
PSALM Ixxii, 17.

1 HAIL to the Lord's Anointed!

Great David's greater Son;
Hail, in the time appointed,
His reign on earth begun!
He comes to break oppression,
To set the captive free:
To take away transgression,
And rule in equity.

2 He shall come down like showers
Upon the fruitful earth,

And love, joy, hope, like flowers,
Spring in His path to birth:
Before Him on the mountains,
Shall peace, the herald, go;
And righteousness, in fountains,
From hill to valley flow.

8 Kings shall fall down before Him,
And gold and incense bring;
All nations shall adore Him,
His praise all people sing:
For He shall have dominion
O'er river, sea, and shore,
Far as the eagle's pinion,
Or dove's light wing can soar.

O'er every foe victorious,
He on His throne shall rest;
From age to age more glorious,
All blessing and all blest:
The tide of time shall never
His covenant remove;

His name shall stand for ever;
That name to us is-Love.

"The Head, even Christ."
EPH. iv. 15.

NE is our Master,-Christ,
To Him we stand or fall;

Of His own Church, the one great Head,
And Lawgiver of all.

2 Jesus, Thou King of saints,
Lord of my conscience be;

Sole Ruler of Thy kingdom, come
And guide and govern me!

THE HOLY SPIRIT.

"Access by one Spirit."
EPH. ii. 18.

1 COME, Holy Spirit, calm my mind,

And fit me to approach my God;
Remove each vain, each worldly thought,
And make me, Lord, Thy blest abode.

2 Hast Thou imparted to my soul
A living spark of heavenly fire?
O kindle now the sacred flame,
And let it rise in pure desire.

3 Reveal to me the Saviour's love,
The love that Christ for sinners bore;
Give me a new and contrite heart,
A heart that Saviour to adore.

HOLY

"A New Spirit."

EZEK. Xxxvi. 26.

LY Spirit, come, renew me,
Make me holy, make me just;

I am evil, O subdue me

To His yoke, in whom I trust!

2 I would have new thought and feeling,
New desire, and new delight;
Grant, O grant me the revealing

Made by Thine own heavenly light!

3 Make me love my God; and serving
Him supremely, day by day,-
Without wandering, without swerving.
May I tread the heavenly way!

"The Spirit of Truth."
JOHN XVI. 13.

COME, Holy Spirit, come!
Let Thy bright beams arise;
Dispel all sorrow from our minds,
All darkness from our eyes.

Convince us of our sin;

Then lead to Jesus' blood,

And to our wondering view reveal
The secret love of God.

"Tis Thine to cleanse the heart,
To sanctify the soul,

To pour fresh life through every part,
And new create the whole.

Dwell, therefore, in our hearts;

Our minds from bondage free;

S.M.

Then shall we know, and praise, and love,
The Father, Son, and Thee.

"Teach me the way of Thy statutes."

PSALM CXix. 33.

THAT the Lord would guide my ways,
To keep His statutes still!

O that my God would grant me grace,
To know and do His will!

2 O send Thy Spirit down to write
Thy law upon my heart!

Nor let my tongue indulge deceit,
Nor act the liar's part.

8 From vanity turn off mine eyes;
Let no corrupt design,

Nor covetous desire, arise
Within this soul of mine.

4 Order my footsteps by Thy word,
And make my heart sincere:
Let sin have no dominion, Lord,
But keep my conscience clear.

95

Make me to walk in Thy commands,-
'Tis a delightful road!

Nor let my head, nor heart, nor hands,
Offend against my God.

"He dwelleth with you."
JOHN xiv. 17.

ND will the mighty God,

Whom heaven cannot contain,

Make me His temple and abode,

And in me live and reign?

Come, Spirit of the Lord,
Teacher, and heavenly Guide!
Be it according to Thy word,
And in my heart reside.

O Holy, Holy Ghost!

Pervade this soul of mine;
In me renew Thy Pentecost,-
Reveal Thy power divine!

Make it my highest bliss,
Thy blessed fruits to know;
Thy joy, and peace, and gentleness,
Goodness and faith to show.

Be it my greatest fear

Thy holiness to grieve;
Walk in the Spirit even here,
And in the Spirit live.

Now let me live in Thee,
My inner life of love;
So, only, shall I meetened be
For spirit-life above.

"The Guide of my youth."

JER. iii. 4.

8's.6.8's.6,

GREAT God, our youthful voices raise,

And tune our lips and hearts with praise, Thy goodness to adore:

Our life, our health, our every friend,

From Thee arose, on Thee depend:

Help us to love Thee more.

2 Stretch o'er our heads Thy guardian wings; Secure the weak, O King of kings!

97

1

The stranger's refuge be;

And, as Thy Spirit guides our youth,
Inspire our opening minds with truth-
The truth that leads to Thee.

"I will pour out My Spirit."
JOEL ii, 28.

SPIRIT divine! attend our prayer,

And make each heart Thy home;
Descend with all Thy gracious power,-
O come, Great Spirit, come !

2 Come as the light-to us reveal

Our emptiness and woe;

And lead us in those paths of life,
Where all the righteous go.

C.M.

3 Come as the fire, and purge our hearts,
Like sacrificial flame!

Let our whole souls an offering be
To our Redeemer's name.

4 Come as the dew-and sweetly bless
This consecrated hour,

98

Till every mind be taught to own
Thy fertilizing power.

5 Come as the dove-and spread Thy wings, The wings of peaceful love;

1

And let our gathering here become
Blest as the church above.

"I will put My Spirit within you."
EZEK. XXXVi. 27.

COME, gracious Spirit, heavenly dove,
With light and comfort from above,-
Be Thou our Guardian, Thou our Guide;
O'er every thought and step preside.

2 O turn us, with a Father's care,
From every sin and hurtful snare ;
Lead to Thy word,-that rules must give,
And teach us lessons how to live.

3 The light of truth, O Lord, display,
And make us know and choose Thy way;
Plant holy fear in every heart,

That we from God may ne'er depart.

4 Lead us to holiness-the road

That we must take to dwell with God;
Lead us to Christ-the living way,
Ner let us from His pastures stray.

5 Lead us to God-our final rest,
In His enjoyment to be blest:
Lead us to heaven, our home above,
Of perfect happiness and love.

99

"Grieve not the Holy Spirit."
EPH. iv. 30.

SHALL we grieve the Holy Spirit,
Who, despising not our youth,
Would assist us to inherit

All the wealth of heavenly truth?

2 What amazing condescension

Does this sacred guide display,
When He rouses our attention
To the peaceful, pleasant way!
