"The Desire of all nations."
HAG. ii. 7.

1 RECEIVE Messiah gladly,

And lift the downcast eyes:
Ye people, speak not sadly;

He makes the fallen rise.
In all your habitations

Complaint and crying cease;
The long Desire of Nations
Brings everlasting peace.

2 He comes, with succour speedy,
To those who suffer wrong;
To help the poor and needy,
And bid the weak be strong;
To give them songs for sighing;
Their darkness turn to light,
Whose souls, in bondage lying,
Were precious in His sight.
3 By such shall He be feared,

1

While sun and moon endure,
Beloved, obeyed, reveréd,—
For He shall judge the poor,
Through changing generations,
With justice, mercy, truth,
While stars maintain their stations,
Or moons renew their youth.

I

"Thou knowest that I love Thee."
JOHN XXI. 17.

LOVE the Lord who died for me,

I love His grace divine and free,
I love the scriptures, there I read
Christ loved me, and for me did bleed.

2 I love to hear that He was slain,
I love His every grief and pain,
I love to meditate by faith
Upon His meritorious death.

4

3 I love Mount Calvary, where His love,
Stronger than death itself did prove!
I love to walk His mournful way,
I love the grave where Jesus lay.

I love His people and their ways,

I love with them to pray and praise,

I love the Father and the Son,
I love the Spirit He sent down.

D.7.6.

5 I love to think the time will come
When I with Him shall be at home,
And praise Him in eternity:-
Then shall my love completed be.

"There is a lad here."
JOHN Vi. 9.

WHEN Jesus, at a wondrous feast,
Five thousand people fed,

And, with almighty power, increased
The fish and barley bread.

2 A lad was there-whose frugal store
Received the Saviour's word;

C.M.

Thus was He raised, though mean and poor,
To wait upon the Lord;

3 Thrice happy youth, how blessed his lot;
O Lord, permit that we,

Although our eyes behold Thee not,
May thus Thy servants be.

4 Thy steps, dear Saviour, we would trace;
And like Thy followers, feed

On heavenly bread; Thy plenteous grace
Supplying all our need.

5 Our time and all our active powers,
All good that we have known,

In solemn trust alone are ours,-
"We give Thee of Thine own."

6 Lord, with a smile of pardoning love,
Our feeble efforts see;

71

And, till we reach Thy heaven above,
Help us to follow Thee!

"Thou shalt guide me with Thy counsel."
PSALM 1xxiii. 24.

8's & 7's

1 WITH Thy counsel Thou shalt guide me,

O Thou Shepherd of the flock;
Safe from every tempest hide me!
Fixed upon the living Rock.

2 Poor and needy, O receive me!

Be Thy rod my staff and stay:
And that blessed portion give me
Which no power can take away.
8 Never leave me, nor forsake me,
More and more reveal Thy love;
Till Thou shalt a pillar make mu
In the house of God above.

4 Then the song of grace abounding,
Freely round Thy throne shall rise,
And Thy praise for ever sounding,
Fill Thy temple in the skies.

"I am the good Shepherd."
JOHN X. 11.

THOU good Shepherd, who Thy life
Gav'st to redeem Thy sheep,

Call us by name among the lambs,
And near Thee safely keep.

2 Here may we know and love Thy voice,
And from the stranger flee:
Hereafter in the heavenly fold,

O gather us to Thee.

8 There hunger shall we know no more,-
Thy gentle hand shall feed;

There shall we thirst no more,-Thou wilt
To living fountains lead.

4 And there shall be no night, no cloud,
But one eternal day;

73

1

And God Himself from every eye
Shall wipe all tears away.

"The Lord is my Shepherd."
PSALM Xxiii. 1.

SAVIOUR, like a shepherd lead us,
Much we need Thy tenderest care;
In Thy pleasant pastures feed us,
For our use Thy folds prepare:
Blessed Jesus,

Thou hast bought us,-Thine we are.

2 We are Thine, do Thou befriend us,
Be the Guardian of our way;
Keep Thy flock, from sin defend us,
Seek us when we go astray:
Blessed Jesus,

Hear and help us when we pray.

3 Thou hast promised to receive us,
Poor and sinful though we be;
Thou hast mercy to relieve us,
Grace to cleanse, and power to free:
Blessed Jesus,

Let us early turn to Thee.

C.M.

8's 7.4.7.

4 Early, let us seek Thy favour,
Early, let us do Thy will;
Blessed Lord, and only Saviour,
With Thyself our bosoms fill:
Blessed Jesus,

74

Thou hast loved us,-love us still!

[blocks in formation]

1 My dear Redeemer and my Lord,

I read my duty in Thy word;
But, in Thy life, the law appears
Drawn out in living characters.

2 Such was Thy truth, and such Thy zeal,
Such deference to Thy Father's will,
Such love, and meekness so divine,-

I would transcribe and make them mine.
3 Cold mountains, and the midnight air,
Witnessed the fervour of Thy prayer;
The desert Thy temptations knew,
Thy conflict, and Thy victory, too.
4 Be Thou my Pattern,-make me bear
More of Thy gracious image here;
Then God, the Judge, shall own my name,
Among the followers of the Lamb.

Lo

"Save now, I beseech Thee."
PSALM CXviii. 25.

ORD of mercy and of might,
Of mankind the life and light,
Maker, Teacher, Infinite!

Jesus, hear and save!

2 Strong Creator, Saviour mild,
Humble to a mortal child,
Captive, beaten, bound, reviled!
Jesus, hear and save!

3 Throned above celestial things,
Borne aloft on angels' wings,
Lord of lords, and King of kings,
Jesus, hear and save!

4 Soon to come to earth again,
Judge of angels and of men!
Hear us now, and hear us then
Jesus, hear and save!

I

[blocks in formation]

ASK not honour, pomp, nor praise,
By worldly men esteemed;

I ask-from sin's deceitful ways
To feel my soul redeemed.

2 I ask-experience of Thy power,
To sanctify my heart;
To purify me more and more
In every inward part.

3 I ask--as faithful Christians do,
Dear Lord to live to Thee;

And, by my words and works, to shew
That Christ hath died for me.

4 O grant me, through Thy precious blood, The gospel thus to grace;

77

Renew my heart, O Lamb of God,
And form me for Thy praise !

"I kept them in Thy name."
JOHN Xvii. 12.

LAMB of God! still keep me
Near to Thy wounded side;

'Tis only then in safety

And peace I can abide;

What foes and snares surround me!
What doubts and fears within!
The grace that sought and found me
Alone can keep me clean.

'Tis only in Thee hiding,

I feel my life secure,

Only in Thee abiding,

'The conflict can endure:
Thine arm the victory gaineth
O'er every hateful foe;
Thy love my heart sustaineth
In all its care and woe.

3 Soon shall my eyes behold Thee,
With rapture, face to face;
One half hath not been told me
Of all Thy power and grace:
Thy beauty, Lord, and glory,
The wonders of Thy love,
Shall be the endless story
Of all Thy saints above.
