3 Glory to God! let man reply,
For Christ the Lord is come;
Behold Him in a manger lie,-
A stable is His home!

4 Glory to God! for love so mild;
How wonderful the plan,

That Jesus once became a child
To save rebellious man.

5 Glory to God! let all the earth
Join in the heavenly song,

And praise Him for the Saviour's birth
In every land and tongue.

D

"Jesus was born in Bethlehem"
MATT. ii. 1.

1 CHEPHERDS, keeping watch by night;
Saw around a glorious night;
Heard an angel then proclaim,
"Christ is born in Bethlehem."

2 Soon by many a heavenly tongue,
"Glory be to God!" was sung,
"Peace on earth, good-will to men,
Christ is born in Bethlehem."

3 Joyful tidings to mankind!

Richest grace they now may find;
Children, too, this grace may claim,-
"Christ is born in Bethlehem."

4 O how great our Saviour's love,
Thus to leave His throne above;
Thus to bear our guilt and shame,
And be born at Bethlehem.

5 Lord, accept our warmest praise
For this condescending grace,
And our hearts with love inflame
For Thy birth at Bethlehem.

"He restored my soul."

PSALM Xxiii. 3.

JESUS my Shepherd is,

'Twas He that loved my soul,

"Twas He that washed me in His blood,
"Twas Ho that made me whole.

I was a wandering sheep,

I would not be controlled;

But now I love the Shepherd's voice,
I love, I love the fold!

That found the wandering sheep;

'Twas He that brought me to the fold,
'Tis He that still doth keep.

I was a wayward child,

I once preferred to roam;

But now I love my Father's voice.
I love, I love His home!

"Green pastures."

PSALM Xxiii, 2.

CHEPHERD of Thy little flock,

Lead me to the shadowing rock,
Where the richest pastures grow,
Where the living waters flow.

2 By that pure and silent stream,
Sheltered from the scorching beam,
Shepherd, Saviour, Guardian, Guide,
Keep me ever near Thy side!

[blocks in formation]

THERE is a fountain filled with blood,

Drawn from Emanuel's veins;

And sinners, plunged beneath that flood,
Lose all their guilty stains.

2 The dying thief rejoiced to see
That fountain in his day;

And there may I, tho' vile as he,
Wash all my sins away.

3 There in a nobler, sweeter song,
I'll sing His power to save,

Lies silent in the grave.

Shall never lose its power,

Till all the ransomed church of God
Be saved, to sin no more.

"Unto Him that loved us."
REV. 1. 5.

WHAT led the Son of God

To leave His throne on high,
To shed His precious blood,
To suffer and to die?

His pure, unbounded love to us
Led Him to die and suffer thus.

What moves Him to impart
His Spirit from above,
Thereby to fill our hearts

With heavenly peace and love?
His pure, unbounded love to us
Moves Him to give His Spirit thus.

Why are we taught to pray,

And read His word of truth?
To keep His holy day,

And serve Him in our youth?

His pure, unbounded love for us

Has raised up friends to teach us thus.

The warmest thanks we owe

To Thee, O God of grace!

Our hearts should overflow
In grateful love and praise;

Help us, O Lord, to praise Thee thus,
For Thine amazing love to us.

"A man shall be as an hiding-place."
ISAIAH XXXii. 2.

AV

WAKE, sweet harp of Judah, wake!
Re-tune thy strings for Jesus' sake;
We sing the Saviour of our race,
The Lamb, our Shield and Hiding-place.
2 'Tis He, the Lamb, to Him we fly,
While the dread tempest passes by;
God sees His Well-beloved's face,
And spares us in our Hiding-place.
3 While yet we sojourn here below,
Pollutions still our hearts o'erflow;
fallen, mean, and guilty race,
We deeply need a Hiding-place!
4 Yet days and years will quickly glide,
These bodies must be laid aside,
But we may welcome Jordan's flood,
If washed in Jesus' cleansing blood.

5 Then pure, immortal, sinless, bright,
Enrobed in everlasting light,

63

We meet the Father face to face,
And need no more a Hiding-place.

"They shall hear My voice."
JOHN X. 16.

1 ARK! a still small voice is heard

HGently speaking from above;

"Tis the great Redeemer's word,
'Tis the message of His love.
Hear the call to you addressed,
Ye who would be truly blessed!
"Those who, with devoted mind,
Seek, in early life, My face,
Shall My lasting favour find,
And enjoy My richest grace.
Early, then, while yet I wait,
Seek Me, ere it be too late."

8 Lord, we come without delay;
We would love and seek Thee thus;
Jesus, now Thy love display,
Saving, guiding, blessing us!
May we dwell with Thee above,
Ever happy in Thy love!

"Blessed is the man that heareth Me."
PROV. viii. 34.

1 YE hearts with youthful vigour warm,

In smiling crowds draw near,

And turn from every mortal charm,
A Saviour's voice to hear.

2 He, Lord of all the worlds on high,
Stoops to converse with you,

[ocr errors]

And lays His radiant glories by,
Your friendship to pursue.

"The soul that longs to see My grace
Is sure My love to gain,

And those that early seek My face
Shall never seek in vain."

4 What object, Lord, my soul should move,
If once compared with Thee?

What beauty should command my love,
Like what in Christ I see?

Away, ye false delusive toys,

Vain tempters of the mind!

"Tis here I fix my lasting choice,
For here true bliss I find!

"Behold, I stand at the door and knock.”

REV. iii. 20.

EHOLD a stranger at the door!

BEE

C.M.

L.M.

He gently knocks, has knocked before.

Has waited long, is waiting still:

You use no other friend so ill.

8.8.8.8.

2 But will He prove a friend indeed?
He will, the very friend you need;
The man of Nazareth is He,

With garments died from Calvary.
3 O lovely attitude! He stands

With melting heart and open hands;
O matchless kindness! and He shews
That matchless kindness to His foes.
4 Rise, touched with gratitude divine,
Turn out His enemy and thine;
Turn out that hateful monster,-sin,
And let the heavenly stranger in!

"Rise, He calleth thee."
MARK X. 49.

UIDE of my steps along life's way,
Jesus be still my Strength and Stay;

I would obey Thy voice to-day,

Long hast Thou called for me.

2 By gospel truth, so often heard,

Through conscience by the Spirit stirred,
In many a page of Thy blest word,
Saviour, Thou callest me.

3 Storms will arise, and skies be dark,
Others are safe within the ark,

Christ welcomes all who come, and hark,
I hear Him call for me.

4 Only, dear Saviour, let Thy love,

67

While here, each doubt and fear remove,
All will be peace, when from above,
The Master calls for me.

L

"Faithful is He that calleth you."

1 THESS. V. 24.

ET us adore the grace that seeks
To draw our hearts above;
Attend, 'tis God the Saviour speaks,
And every word is love.

2 "Come forth," He says,

66 no more pursue
The paths that lead to death;
Look up, a bleeding Saviour view,-
Look, and be saved by faith!"

3 Lord, speak these words to every heart,
By Thine all powerful voice;

Early from sin may we depart,
And make Thy love our choice.
