ADDITIONAL HYMNS.

"Hosanna in the highest."

Mark xi. 10.

1 WE gather, we gather, dear Jesus, to bring

P.M.

The breathings of love 'mid the blossoms of
Spring;

Our Maker! Redeemer! we gratefully raise

Our hearts and our voices in hymning Thy praise. Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hosanna in the highest! Hallelujah Hallelujah! Hosanna to the Lord.

2 When stooping to earth from the brightness of heaven,

Thy blood for our ransom so freely was given;
Thou deignedst to listen while children adored,
With joyful hosannas, the blessed of the Lord.
Hallelujah, &c.

3 Those arms which embraced little children of old,
Still love to encircle the lambs of the fold;
That grace which inviteth the wandering home
Hath never forbidden the youngest to come.
Hallelujah, &c.

4 Hosanna! Hosauna! Great Teacher, we raise
Our hearts and our voices in hymning Thy praise,
For precept and promise so graciously given,
For blessings of earth, and the glories of heaven.
Hallelujah, &c.

"They were strangers and pilgrims."
Heb. xi. 13.

WHILE pilgrims on our journey here,

We oft may faint and weary be,

But soon our longing waiting eyes
The city that we seek shall see.

P.M.

And mansions bright are waiting, where
We all shall rest when we get there:
When we get there, when we get there,
We all shall rest when we get there.

2 A desert wide before us lies,

But when its barren sands are passed,
Beyond the Jordan we shall see

The Canaan that we love at last.
Its fields of fadeless green, its flowers,
If faithful, shall at last be ours;
When we get there, when we get there,
How sweet our rest when we get there.
3 Here we must bear the cross, and still
The path our Master trod pursue,
Keeping, amidst reproach and shame,
His bright example in our view.
When we get there we shall lay down
The cross, and wear a glorious crown;
When we get there, when we get there,
How bright our crown when we get there.

"The good land beyond Jordan."
Deut. iii. 25.

1 MY

Y days are gliding swiftly by,
And I, a pilgrim stranger,
Would not detain them as they fly,
Those hours of toil and danger.

2 We'll gird our loins, my brethren dear,
Our distant home discerning;

Our absent Lord has left us word,
Let every lamp be burning,

3 Should coming days be cold and dark,
We need not cease our singing.
That perfect rest nought can molest,
Where golden harps are ringing.

4 Let sorrow's rudest tempest blow,
Each chord on earth to sever,

8.7.

Our King, says, Come, and there's our home
For ever, oh! for ever!

Chorus-For oh! we stand on Jordan's strand,
Our friends are passing over,

And just before the shining shore,
We may almost discover.

532

1

"Come before His presence with singing."

A

Ps. c. 2.

NOTHER year has passed away,
Time swiftly glides along;
We come again to praise and pray

And sing our festive song.

2 We come the Saviour's name to praise,
To sing the wondrous love

Of Him who guards us all our days,
And leads to heaven above.

3 We'll sing of mercies daily given,
Through every passing year;
We'll sing the promises of heaven,
With voices loud and clear.

4 Our youthful hearts we'll gladly raise,
Our voices sweetly sing,

A joyous song of grateful praise
To heaven's eternal King.

Chorus-We come, we come,

533

We come with song to greet you;
We come, we come,

We come with song again.

C.M.

"There remaineth a rest to the people of God."

1 Lo

Heb. ix. 9.

ORD of the Sabbath! hear our vows,
On this Thy day, in this Thy house:
Accept as grateful sacrifice,

The songs which from the desert rise.

2 Thine earthly Sabbaths, Lord, we love,
But there's a nobler rest above;
To that our fainting souls aspire,
With ardent hope and strong desire.
3 No more fatigue, no more distress
No guilt the conscience to oppress;
No sighs there mingle with the song
Resounding from immortal tongues
4 No rude alarms of raging foes;

;

No cares to break the long repose;
No clouded sun, no changeful moon,
But sacred, high, eternal noon.

L.M.

5 O long-expected day, begin!

534

1

Dawn on these realms of woe and sin;
Thine earthly Sabbaths, Lord, we love;
But wait the nobler rest above.

"The Lord will give grace."

Ps. lxxxiv. 11.

SAVIOUR, shed thy sweetest blessing
On the Missionaries' way,

Hear their prayer Thy throne addressing,
While they sojourn far away.

Bid them seek lost souls and love them,
With a fervent, patient heart:

Let Thy smile shine bright above them,
When from other smiles they part.

2 Shed abroad Thy love within them,

Thus their love to souls shall wake :
They shall watch and toil to win them-
Live or die for heathen's sake.
Speed them forth thy message telling,
Sweeten all the toils they brave;
Be on foreign shores their dwelling,
Watch them in a foreign grave.

3 Where the seed e'en now is springing-
Precious seed in weeping sown;
Soon may faith, her sheaves in-bringing,
Claim the harvest joy her own.
Oh! redeem to heavenly meetness,
Kindreds of the East and West;
Ransomed souls enhance the sweetness
Of the Missionaries' rest.

"When I appear before God."
Ps. xlii. 2.

SHALL we gather at the river,

Where bright angel feet have trod,
With its crystal tide for ever
Flowing by the throne of God?

2 On the margin of the river,

Washing up its silver spray,
We will walk and worship ever,
All the happy golden day.

3 Ere we reach the shining river,
Lay we every burden down;
Grace our spirits will deliver,
And provide a robe and crown.

8.7.

8.7.8.7

4 At the smiling of the river,
Mirror of the Saviour's face,
Saints whom death will never sever
Lift their songs of saving grace.
5 Soon we'll reach the silver river,
Soon our pilgrimage will cease;
Soon our happy hearts will quiver
With the melody of peace.
Chorus-Yes, we'll gather at the river,

536

1

The beautiful, the beautiful river;
Gather with the saints at the river,
That flows by the throne of God.

"The Spirit and the Bride say come."
Rev. xxii. 17.

SHALL we meet beyond the river,
Where the surges cease to roll,
Where, in all the bright for ever,

Sorrow ne'er shall press the soul?
2 Shall we meet in that blest harbour,
When our stormy voyage is o'er ?
Shall we meet and cast the anchor
By the fair celestial shore ?

3

Shall we meet in yonder city,

Where the towers of crystal shine?
Where the walls are all of jasper,
Built by workmanship divine.

8.7.8.7.8.7.

4 Shall we meet with many a loved one,
That was torn from our embrace ?
Shall we listen to their voices,

And behold them face to face?

5 Shall we meet with Christ our Saviour
When He comes to claim His own?

537

1

Shall we know His blessed favour,
And sit down upon His throne?
Chorus-Shall we meet beyond the river,
Where the surges cease to roll?

"I rejoice at Thy word."

Ps. cxix. 162.

11.8.12.

THANK God for the Bible! 'tis there that we find

The story of Christ and His love

How He came down to earth from His beautiful home,
In the mansions of glory above.
