"Quit you like men! be strong."
1 COR. xvi. 13.

STAND up! stand up for Jesus!
Ye soldiers of the cross;
Lift high his royal banner,
It must not suffer loss:
From victory unto victory,
His army shall He lead,
Till every foe is vanquished,
And Christ is Lord indeed.

2 Stand up! stand up for Jesus!
The triumph-call obey;
Forth to the mighty conflict,
In this His glorious day:

Ye that are men, now serve Him,
Against unnumbered foes;

Your courage rise with danger,
And strength to strength oppose.
8 Stand up! stand up for Jesus!
Stand in His strength alone;
The arm of flesh will fail you,
Ye dare not trust your own:
Put on the gospel armour,
And, watching unto prayer,
Where duty calls, or danger,
Be never wanting there.

4 Stand up! stand up for Jesus!
The strife will not be long:
This day the noise of battle,
The next the victor's song:
To him that overcometh,
A crown of life shall be;
He with the King of Glory
Shall reign eternally.

"Whoso humbleth himself is greatest."

THE

MATT. Xviii. 4.

HE bird that soars on highest wing,
Builds on the ground her lowly nest;

And she that doth most sweetly sing,

Sings in the shade when all things rest :-
In lark and nightingale we see,

What honour hath humility.

2 When Mary chose the better part, She meekly sat at Jesu's feet;

And Lydia's gently-opened heart,

Was made for God's own temple meet :

C

Fairest and best adorned is she
Whose clothing is humility.

3 The saint that wears heaven's brightest crown, In deepest adoration bends;

The weight of glory bears him down

The most, when most his soul ascends:
Nearest the throne itself must be

The footstool of humility.

"They desire a better country."
HEB. XI. 16.

1 THERE is a better world they say,

Oh, so bright!

Where sin and woe are done away,

Oh, so bright!

And music fills the balmy air,
And angels with bright wings are there,
And harps of gold and mansions fair,

Oh, so bright!

2 No clouds e'er pass along its sky,

Happy land!

No tear-drop glistens in the eye,

Happy land!

They drink the gushing streams of grace,
And gaze upon the Saviour's face,
Whose brightness fills the holy place:

Happy land!

3 Though we are sinners, every one,

445

Jesus died!
And though our crown of peace is gone,
Jesus died!

We may be cleansed from every stain,
We may be crowned with bliss again,
And in that land of pleasure reign,
Jesus died!

"A name which is above every name."
PHIL. ii. 9.

THERE

is a name I love to hear:
I love to speak its worth;

It sounds like music in mine ear:
The sweetest name on earth!

2 It tells me of a Saviour's love,
Who died to set me free;

It tells me of His precious blood,
The sinner's perfect plea.

P.M.

C.M

3. Jesus! the name I love so well, The name I love to hear;

4

No saint on earth his worth can tell,
No heart conceive how dear.

His name shall shed its fragrance still
Along this thorny road;

Shall sweetly smooth the rugged hill
That leads me up to God.

5 And there, with all the blood-bought throng, From sin and sorrow free,

446

1.

I'll sing the new eternal song

Of Jesu's love for me.

"Of such is the kingdom of Heaven."

MARK X. 14.

THERE'S a rest for little children,
Above the bright blue sky,

Who love the blessed Saviour,
And "Abba, Father," cry;
A rest from every turmoil,
From sin and danger free;
Where every little pilgrim
Shall rest eternally.

2 There's a home for little children,
Above the bright blue sky,
Where Jesus reigns in glory;
A home of peace and joy.
No home on earth is like it,
Or can with it compare;
For every one is happy-

Nor could be happier-there.

3 There's a Friend for little children,
Above the bright blue sky;

A Friend who never changeth,
Whose love can never die.
Unlike our friends by nature,
Who change with changing years,
This friend is always worthy

The precious name he bears.

4 There's a crown for little children,
Above the bright blue sky;
And all who look for Jesus,
Shall wear it by and by;
A crown of brightest glory;
Which He will then bestow
en all who've found His favour,
And loved His name below.

P.M.

5 There's a robe for little children,
Above the bright blue sky;
And a harp of sweetest music;
And a palm of victory.
All, all above is treasured,
And found in Christ alone;
O come, dear little children,
That all may be your own.
"Times of refreshing shall come."
ACTS iii, 19.

1

THERE'S not a time to us more sweet

Than these returning days;

Nor other friend to us so dear
As Jesus, whom we praise.

2 Our hearts are bounding high with joy;
With shouts his praise proclaim,

And pray that he may smile on those
Who taught us first His name.

3 There are no gems of greater worth
Than hearts to Jesus given;

Nor happier children on the earth
Than those who hope for heaven.

C.31

4 For those who serve him while they live
His arm in death will save;

And raise, as Spring the flowers renews
All glorious-from the grave.

5 In heaven no shouts shall louder ring,
In praise of him who rules,

448

Nor happier bands surround the King,
Than those from Sabbath Schools.

"Enter in at the strait gate."

LUKE Xiii. 24,

1 THE road that many travel

Is not the road for me;

It leads to sin and sorrow;

In it I would not be :

P.M

But there's a road that leads to God,
By means of Christ's most precious blood,-
A road most safe and free:

O that's the road for me.

2 The crown that decks the monarch,

Is not the crown for me;

It dazzles but a moment,

Its brightness soon will flee !

But there's a crown prepared above,
For all who walk in humble love,
Which ever bright will be!
O! that's the crown for me.

The song that folly teaches,
Is not the song for me;
Ere long 'twill turn to weeping,
For this is heaven's decree :
But there's a song the ransomed sing
To Jesus, their exalted King,

With joyful heart and tongue,
O! that's the song for me.

"Our salvation nearer."
ROM. xiii. 11.

THIS sweetly solemn thought
Can cheer the evening hour,-
I'm nearer to my home to-day

Than e'er I've been before.

Nearer the nightless day,
Nor sun nor moon to shine;

Nearer the fountains pure and deep,
Water of Life divine

Nearer the pearly gates,

The city pure as gold;

Nearer the presence of its King,

To share his love untold.

Nearer my Father's house.

Where many mansions be;

Nearer the glorious great white throne,
Nearer the crystal sea.

Nearer the vale of death,

To lay my burden down;

To bear the palm and wear the crown,
And stand before the throne.

"They may rest from their labours."
REV. xiv. 13.

THOUGH often here we're weary,
There is sweet rest above,

A rest that is eternal,

Where all is peace and love,
O let us then press forward,
That glorious rest to gain ;
We'll soon be free from sorrow,
From toil, and care, and pain.
There is sweet rest in heaven
