3 O let not earth, nor hell, prevail
To make our anxious labours fall,
Or our exertions cease!

But be Thy name by each confest,
On each one let Thy Spirit rest,
May each possess Thy peace.

4 Let nothing, Lord, a hindrance prove To heaven-born faith, and active love, And holy amity:

That we, and they, and all Thine host,
May make Thy sacred name our boast
Through all eternity.

"God forbid that I should glory!"

WHEN

GAL. vi. 14.

I survey the wondrous cross
On which the Prince of Glory died,
My richest gain I count but loss,
And pour contempt on all my pride.

2 Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast,
Save in the death of Christ my God:
All the vain things which charm me most.
I sacrifice them to His blood.

3 See from His head, His hands, His feet,
Sorrow and love flow mingled down!
Did e'er such love and sorrow meet,
Or thorns compose so rich a crown ?
4 His dying crimson, like a robe,
Spreads o'er His body on the tree;
-Now am I dead to all the globe,
And all the globe is dead to me!

5 Were the whole realm of nature mine,
That were a present far too small;
Love so amazing-so divine-
Demands my soul, my life, my all!

"A good soldier of Jesus Christ."
2 TIM. ii. 3.

MI a soldier of the cross,

AM

A follower of the Lamb?
And shall I fear to own His cause,
Or blush to speak His name?

2 Are there no foes for me to face-
Must I not stem the flood?

Is this vile world a friend to grace,
To help me on to God?

3 Sure I must fight, if I would reign:
Increase my courage, Lord!
I'll bear the toil, endure the pain,
Supported by Thy word.

4 Thy saints, in all this glorious war,
Shall conquer, though they're slain;
They see the triumph from afar,
And shall with Jesus reign.

5 When that illustrious day shall rise,
And all Thine armies shine

In robes of victory, through the skies,
The glory shall be Thine!

MY

"O Lord, truly I am Thy servant."
PSALM CXVI. 16.

gracious Lord, I own Thy right
To every service I can pay;
And call it my supreme delight
To hear Thy dictates, and obey.
2 What is my being, but for Thee-
Its sure support, its noblest end;
Thy ever-smiling face to see,

And serve the cause of such a Friend? 3 I would not breathe for worldly joy, Nor only for my worldly good;

Nor future days, nor powers, employ
To spread a sounding name abroad.
4 'Tis to my Saviour I would live;
To Him, who for my ransom died:
Nor could untainted Eden give
Such bliss as blossoms at His side.
5 His work my hoary age shall bless,
When youthful vigour is no more;
And my last hour of life confess
His love hath animating power.

"Watch and pray."

MATT. XXVI. 41.

CHARGE to keep I have;
A God to glorify;

A never-dying soul to save,
And fit it for the sky;

To serve the present age;
My calling to fulfil :

O may it all my powers engage
To do my Master's will!

1

Arm me with jealous care,
As in Thy sight to live;
And O, Thy servant, Lord, prepare
A strict account to give!

4 Help me to watch and pray,
And on Thyself rely;
Assured, if I my trust betray,
I shall for ever die.

"We will surely perform our vows."
JER. xliv. 25.

WITNESS, ye men and angels, now;

Before the Lord we speak :

To Him we make our solemn vow,-
A vow we dare not break ;-
That, long as life itself shall last,
Ourselves to Christ we yield;
Nor from His cause will we depart,
Nor ever quit the field.

2 We trust not in our native strength,
But on His grace rely,

377

That, with returning wants, the Lord
Will all our need supply.

O guide our doubtful feet aright,

And keep us in Thy ways;

And while we turn our vows to prayers,
Turn Thou our prayers to praise !

"Gain.. counted loss for Christ."

PHILIP iii. 7.

1 No more, my God, I boast no more

Of all the duties I have done;

I quit the hopes I held before,
To trust the merits of Thy Son.

2 Now, for the love I bear His name,
What was my gain, I count my loss;
My former pride, I call my shame,
And nail my glory to His cross.
3 Yes, and I must and will esteem
All things but loss for Jesus' sake;
O may my soul be found in Him,
And of His righteousness partake!
4 The best obedience of my hands

Dares not appear before Thy throne;
But faith can answer Thy demands,
By pleading what my Lord has done.

"Put on the armour of Light,”

ROM. xiii. 12.

SOLDIERS of Christ, arise !

And put your armour on;

Strong in the strength which God supplies
Through His eternal Son.

Strong in the Lord of Hosts,

And in His mighty power;

Who in the strength of Jesus trusts,

Is more than conqueror.

Put on, then, for the fight,

The armour of your God;

And trusting in your Leader's might,
Pursue the path He trod.

Lord, grant that, all things done,
And every conflict past,

We may o'ercome, through Thee alone,
And stand complete at last.

379

"Not having mine own righteousness.”
PHILIP iii. 9.

1 MY God, how perfect are Thy ways!
But mine polluted are;

Sin twines itself about my praise,
And slides into my prayer.

D.S.M.

2 When I would speak what Thou hast done
To save me from my sin,

I cannot make Thy mercies known,
But self-applause creeps in.

3 Divine desire-that holy flame
Thy grace creates in me,
Alas! impatience is its name,
When it returns to Thee.

4 This heart, a fountain of vile thoughts,
How does it overflow!

While self upon the surface floats,
Still bubbling from below.

5 Let others in the gaudy dress

380

Of fancied merit shine,

The Lord shall be my righteousness,-
The Lord for ever mine.

"I am not ashamed of..

ROM. 1. 16.

1 JESUS-and can it ever be

Christ."

L.M.

A mortal man ashamed of Thee?

Scorned be the thought by rich and poor,
My soul shall scorn it more and more.

2 Ashamed of Jesus!-Sooner far May evening blush to own a star: Ashamed of Jesus!-Just as soon

May midnight blush to think of noon.
3 Ashamed of Jesus !-that dear Friend
On whom my hopes of heaven depend!
No: when I blush, be this my shame,
That I no more revere His name.

4 Ashamed of Jesus!-Yes I may
When I've no guilt to wash away,
No tears to wipe, no joys to crave,
And no immortal soul to save.

5 Till then-nor is the boasting vain-
Till then, I boast a Saviour slain :
And O, may this my portion be,
That Saviour's not ashamed of me!

381

"The love of Christ constraineth us."
2 COR. V. 14.

1 Do not I love Thee, O my Lord?

Behold my heart and see;

And turn the cherished idols out
That dare to rival Thee.

2 Do not I love Thee from my soul?
Then let me nothing love:
Dead be my heart to every joy,
When Jesus cannot move.

3 Is not Thy name melodious still
To mine attentive ear?

Doth not each pulse with pleasure bound
My Saviour's voice to hear?

4 Hast Thou a lamb in all Thy flock,
I would disdain to feed ?

Hast Thou a foe, before whose face
I fear Thy cause to plead ?

5 Would not my heart pour forth its blood
In honour of Thy name,

And challenge the cold hand of death
To damp the immortal flame?

6 Thou know'st I love Thee, dearest Lord,
But O, I long to soar

Far from the sphere of mortal joys,
And learn to love Thee more!
