4 Thus seeking so early for knowledge and truth, His childhood in wisdom began;

And therefore the Lord was the guide of his youth,

And made him so mighty a man.

5 So he soon was made king, for the prophet foretold

That God meant to honour him thus:

O Lord, may we serve Thee, like David of old,-
And Thou wilt be mindful of us!

"The children of the kingdom,"
MATT. xiil. 38.

8.6.8.6.8.

ROUND the throne of God in heaven,
Thousands of children stand;
Children, whose sins are all forgiven,
A holy, happy band;

Singing glory, glory, glory!

2 What brought them to that world above,
That heaven so bright and fair,
Where all is peace, and joy, and love,-
How came those children there,
Singing glory, glory, glory?

3 Because the Saviour shed His blood,
To wash away their sin;

Bathed in that pure and precious flood,
Behold them white and clean;

Singing glory, glory, glory!

4 On earth, they sought their Saviour's grace,
On earth, they loved His name ;
So now they see His blesséd face,
And stand before the Lamb;

313

Singing glory, glory, glory!

"Babes in Christ."

1 COR. iii. 1.

6-8'

1 YES, there are little ones in heaven,
Babes such as we, around the throne,
To whom the King of kings hath given
Eternal glory like His own:

Jesus! Thy mercy, rich and free,
Hath suffered them to come to Thee!

2 O! let us think of them to-day,-
Their sweet and everlasting song;
And hope to sing as loud as they,
In the same glorious heaven ere long;
Jesus, may this our portion be,-
O suffer us to come to Thee !

3 To come, with humbleness of mind,
With simple faith, and earnest prayer:
To seek Thy precious cross, and find
Peace-safety-joy-salvation there:
O set our sin-bound spirits free,
And suffer us to come to Thee!

4 To come,-while we are young and gay,
While life, and joy, and hope run high;
To come,-in sorrow's gloomiest day;
To come, at last, when death is nigh:
Lord, in that day our Guardian be,
And suffer us to come to Thee!

PART III.

FOR THE TEACHERS' MEETING.

"There is no restraint to the Lord."
1 SAM. xiv. 16,

1 WHAT various hindrances we meet

In coming to a mercy-seat!

Yet who, that knows the worth of prayer,
But wishes to be often there?

L.M

2 Prayer makes the darkened cloud withdraw!
Prayer climbs the ladder Jacob saw;
Gives exercise to faith and love;
Brings every blessing from above.

3 Restraining prayer-we cease to fight; Prayer makes the Christian's armour bright; And Satan trembles, when he sees

The weakest saint upon his knees.

4 Were half the breath now vainly spent,
To heaven in supplication sent,

Our cheerful song would oftener be,
"Hear what the Lord hath done for me.'

315

"Praying always with all prayer."

EPH. vi. 18.

1 PRAYER is the soul's sincere desire,

Uttered or unexpressed;

The motion of a hidden fire
That trembles in the breast.
Prayer is the burden of a sigh;
The falling of a tear;

The upward glancing of an eye,
When none but God is near.

2 Prayer is the simplest form of speech
That infant lips can try;

D.C.M.

Prayer, the sublimest strains that reach
The Majesty on high.

Prayer is the Christian's vital breath;
The Christian's native air;

His watchword at the gate of death;
He enters heaven with prayer.

3 Prayer is the contrite sinner's voice,
Returning from his ways;

While angels in their songs rejoice,
And cry, "Behold, he prays!"
The saints, in prayer, appear as one,
In word, and deed, and mind;
While, with the Father, and the Son,
Sweet fellowship they find.

4 Nor prayer is made on earth alone:
The Holy Spirit pleads;

And Jesus, on the eternal throne,
For sinners intercedes.

O Thou by whom we come to God,
The Life, the Truth, the Way,-
The path of prayer Thyself hast trod;
Lord, teach us how to pray!

"There am 1 in the midst of them."
MATT. Xviii. 20.

L.M.

WHERE two or three, with sweet accord,

Obedient to their sovereign Lord,
Meet to recount His acts of grace,
And offer solemn prayer and praise,-

"There," says the Saviour, "will I be,
Amid this little company;

To them unveil My smiling face,

And shed My glories round the place." 3 We meet at Thy command, dear Lord, Relying on Thy faithful word:

317

1

Now send Thy Spirit from above,
And fill our hearts with heavenly love.
"Come boldly unto the throne of grace."

HEB. iv. 16.

BEHOLD the throne of grace;

The promise calls us near:
There Jesus shews a smiling face,
And waits to answer prayer.

2 That rich, atoning blood,

Which sprinkled round we see,
Provides for those who come to God
An all prevailing plea.

ENCOURAGEMENT TO PRAYER. [TEACHERS.

Beyond our utmost wants,

His love and power can bless;

To those who seek His face, He grants
More than they can express.

Thine image, Lord, bestow,
Thy presence, and Thy love:
We ask to serve Thee here below,
And reign with Thee above.

"All

[ocr errors]

with one accord in prayer."
ACTS i. 14.

COME, let us leave the world awhile,

Its pleasure, and its care:

Come, spend, beneath our Father's smile,
An hour in praise and prayer.

2 Come, let us join our notes of praise,
With yon seraphic throng;

3

Let harmony our voices raise,
And love divine our song.

""Tis like a little heaven below,"

Where all in peace agree;

May we, united, ever show

This proof of piety!

4 Come, Holy Ghost, Thy strength impart;
Thine influence may we feel,

To cheer each spirit, warm each heart,
And stimulate our zeal.

5 Lord, let no strife our union spoil
But Christian friendship thrive;
And feed the lamp with holy oil,
To keep the flame alive.

6 And when, at length, our weary feet
This vale of tears have trod,

319

May children, and their teachers, meet
Around the throne of God.

"I have called you friends."

JOHN XV. 15.

O.M

D.L.M.

1 HERE, gracious God, beneath Thy feet,

In friendship to the young, we meet;
Joined by the cord of mutual love,
Bound by our common Friend above.
Our hearts Thy throne of grace address:
Smile on our schools-the children bless;
While we our humble labours bend
Thy glorious kingdom to extend.
