LITTLE child, do you love Jesus?
O, how He loves!

Do you wish to go to heaven?
O, how He loves!

First of all ask His forgiveness,

8.4.8.4.3-8'5.4.

With your heart, although quite helpless;
Jesus little children blesses;
O, how He loves!

He will listen to your prayer;
O, how He loves!

Feed you by His tender care;
O, how He loves!

He became a child just like you;
Here he suffered to redeem you ;
And, at last, he died to save you.
O, how He loves!

3 Trust Him, He will ne'er forget you :
O, how He loves!

No, He never will forsake you :
O, how He loves!

None from His strong hand can pluck you;
His almighty arm protects you;

Loving once, He ever loves you.

280

O, how He loves!

"The mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ,"

JUDE 21.

1 HOW kind is the Saviour

How great is His love!

To bless little children
He came from above;
He left holy angels,

And their bright abode,
To dwell here with children,
And teach them the road.

2 He wept in the garden,
And died on the tree,
To open a fountain

For sinners like me;
His blood is that fountain,
Which pardon bestows,
And cleanses the foulest
Wherever it flows.

3 He went back to glory:

But left us His word,
Which oft from our teachers
And pastors we've heard:
He sends forth His Spirit
Our hearts to inflame,
With joy in His service,
And love to His name,

4 Oh, help us, blest Jesus,
More sweetly to praise,
And walk in Thy footsteps
The rest of our days;
Then raise us, dear Saviour,
To taste of Thy love,
And praise Thee for ever
With children above.

"Lead me in Thy truth."
PSALM XXV. 5.

1 SIN, and want, and fear confessing,
Saviour, Thou wilt hear a child;
I would seek, to-day, Thy blessing,
To be taught and reconciled.

2 Keep me, Saviour, deign to guide me
Through a vain and treacherous life;
I would fly to Thee to hide me
From its sin, and woe, and strife.

3 Be Thou still my kind Protector,
Far or near, where'er I be;
May I, for my best Director,
Look, and only look, to Thee.

282

"Thy Spirit is good; lead me...."
PSALM CXliii. 10.

1 LORD, teach a little child to pray,
Thy grace betimes impart;

And grant Thy Holy Spirit may
Renew my infant heart.

2 A sinful creature I was born,

And from my birth have strayed;
I must be wretched and forlorn
Without Thy mercy's aid.

3 Dear Saviour, all my sins forgive,
And wash away their stain;

And fit my soul with Thee to live,
And in Thy kingdom reign.

8.7.8.7.

O.M.

SIN CONFESSED AND MERCY SOUGHT. 4 To Thee let little children come,

For Thou hast said they may;

Thy gentle hand shall bring them home,
And wipe their tears away.

5 For all who early seek Thy face
Shall surely taste Thy love;
O guide us, Jesus, by Thy grace,
To dwell with Thee above!

"These Three agree in Onc."
1 JOHN V. 8.

HOLY Father! hear my cry,
Holy Saviour! bend Thine ear!
Holy spirit! come Thou nigh;
Father, Saviour, Spirit, hear!
2 Father, save me from my sin,
Saviour, I Thy mercy crave,
Gracious Spirit, make me clean;
Father, Son, and Spirit save!
3 Father, let me taste Thy love,
Saviour, fill my soul with peace,
Spirit, come my heart to move;
Father, Son, and Spirit, bless!
4 Father, Son, and Spirit,-Thou
One Jehovah, shed abroad
All Thy grace within me now;
Be my Father, and my God.

"All have sinned."

ROM. iii. 23.

1A SINNER, Lord, behold I stand,

In thought, and word, and deed!
But Jesus sits at Thy right hand,
For such to intercede:

2 And Thou canst change this evil heart,
Canst give a holy mind;

And Thine own heavenly grace impart,
Which those who seek shall find.

3 To heaven can reach the softest word,-
A child's repenting prayer;

For tears are seen, and sighs are heard,
And thoughts regarded there.

4 Then let me all my sins confess,
And pardoning grace implore;
That I may love my follies less,
And love my Saviour more.

"Teach me to do Thy will."
PSALM CXliii. 10.

JESUS, make my froward heart

Humble, teachable, and mild,
Upright, simple, free from art,-
Like a little weanéd child.

2 From all pride and envy free,
Teach me to obey Thy will;

Pleased with all that pleases Thee,-
Love, and praise, and bless Thee, still.

3 Every little child relies

On a care beyond his own;

Knows he's neither strong nor wise,
Fears to stir a step alone.

4 What Thou shalt to-day provide,
Let me as a child receive:
What to-morrow may betide,
Calmly to Thy wisdom leave.

5 Let me, Lord, on Thee rely,
While my heart to Thee I give ;
Happy, when I come to die,
If I die with Thee to live.

"Oh, that Thou wouldest bless me indeed!" 1 CHRON. iv. 10.

ORD, look upon a little child,

L.M

[ocr errors]

By nature sinful, rude, and wild ;
O, put Thy gracious hands on me,
And make me all I ought to be.

2 Make me Thy child, a child of God,
Washed in my precious Saviour's blood;
And my whole heart, from sin set free,
A little vessel full of Thee ;-

8 A star of early dawn, and bright,
Shining within Thy sacred light;
A beam of grace to all around;
A little spot of hallowed ground.

4 Dear Jesus, take me to Thy breast,
And bless me, that I may be blest;
Both when I wake, and when I sleep,
Thy little lamb in safety keep.

"He giveth grace unto the lowly."
PROV. iii. 34.

MY

Saviour and my Friend,

Thou art my constant Guard;
Be Thou my Refuge and Defence,-
My Shield and great Reward.

I am a helpless child,

An heir of woe and shame ;
And but for Thy redeeming blood,
Can nothing better claim.

3 But magnify Thy grace,
By saving one so mean;

And take me to Thine arms of love,
And cleanse, and keep me clean.

"Amen, Alleluia !"
REV. xix. 4.

8.7.8.7.8.6.

MIGHTY God! while, in full chorus,
Saints and angels sound Thy praise;

Listen to unworthy children,

Who their humble voices raise.
Hallelujah! Hallelujah!

Hallelujah! Amen.

2 Jesus bids us all take courage,

And approach His Father's throne;
While He pleads for us in heaven,—
"Father, all their praises own.'

3 Loudly praise the King of glory,
Who became a child of woe,-
Lived and died a man of sorrows,
But subdued our greatest foe.

4 Raise your voices in full chorus,
Praise Him, mighty to redeem ;
Lord of babes, as well as angels,
He is every creature's theme.

1 THY lambs, dear Shepherd, that are weak, Are Thy peculiar care;

"Tis Thine in judgment to afflict,
And Thine in love to spare.

2 Since all the chastisements I feel

Are from Thy love alone,

Let not one murmuring thought arise,
But may Thy will be done.
