8 What He bids us, let us do; Where He leads us, let us go; As He loves us, let our love Daily rise to Him above.
4 Angels praise our Lord, and we Join them with humility;
Poor and weak, we'll sing the more,- Jesus loves the weak and poor.
5 Dear to Him is childhood's prayer; Children's hearts to Him are dear; Heart and voice, let all be given,- All will find its way to heaven!
"The beauty of holiness."
children-read and pray, Love Thy holy word and day, Fly from sin, and seek Thy grace, Learn Thy will, and Christ embrace; They are humble, meek, and mild: Make me, Lord, a holy child!
2 Holy children-love mankind, Are to all good ways inclined, Love their parents to obey, For their friends and teachers pray, Fear with sin to be defiled: Make me, Lord, a holy child!
3 Holy children-when they die, Soar to Christ above the sky, Take their seats around His throne, Make His praise for ever known: May I, Lord, in truth be styled, Now, the Saviour's holy child.
"I am meek and lowly in heart." MATT. XI. 29.
GENTLE Jesus, meek and mild
Look upon a little child;
Pity my simplicity:
Suffer me to come to Thee.
2 Fain I would to Thee be brought; Dearest Lord, forbid it not!
Grant to me, Thy child, a place In the kingdom of Thy grace;
"Children shall see it and be glad." ZECH. X. 7.
THERE was a time when children sang The Saviour's praise, with sacred glee; And all the hills of Judah rang
With their exulting Jubilee.
2 O, to have joined their rapturous songs, And swelled their sweet hosannas high, And blessed Him with our feeble tongues, As He-the Man of Grief-went by !
3 But Christ is now a glorious King, And angels in His presence bow; The humble songs that we can sing- O, can He-will He-hear them now?
4 He can-He will-He loves to hear The notes which babes and sucklings raise : Jesus, we come with trembling fear, O teach our hearts and tongues to praise !
5 We join the hosts around Thy throne, Who once, like us, the desert trod; And thus we make their song our own- "Hosanna to the Son of God!"
"Christ who did no sin." 1 PETER ii, 22.
JESUS Christ, my Lord and Saviour,
Once became a child like me; O that, in my whole behaviour, He my Pattern still may be ! All my nature is unholy;
Pride and passion dwell within: But the Lord was meek and lowly, And was never known to sin.
2 While I'm often vainly trying Some new pleasure to possess, He was always self-denying, Patient in His worst distress. Lord, assist a feeble creature, Guide me by Thy word of truth;
Condescend to be my Teacher, Through my childhood and my youth
"Despise not one of these little ones." MATT. Xviii. 10.
children once to Jesu came, His blessing to entreat; And I may humbly do the same Before His mercy-seat.
2 Though now He is not here below, But on His heavenly hill, To Him may little children go And seek a blessing still.
3 Well pleased these little ones to see, The dear Redeemer smiled; Oh, then He will not frown on me,-- A poor, unworthy child.
4 If babes, so many years ago, His tender pity drew,
He will not, surely, let me go Without a blessing too.
5 Then while, this favour to implore, My youthful hands are spread, Do Thou Thy sacred blessing pour, Dear Jesus, on my head.
"For your sakes He became poor." 2 COR. viii. 9.
CHRIST is merciful and mild;
was once a little child: He, whom heavenly hosts adore, Lived on earth among the poor, 2 Thus He laid His glory by,
When for us He stooped to die: How I wonder when I see
His unbounded love to me!
3 He, the sick, to health restored, To the poor, He preached the word; Even children had a share
Of His love and tender care.
4 Every bird can build its nest,
Foxes have their place of rest; He by whom the world was made, Had not where to lay His head. 5 He, who is the Lord most high, Once was poorer far than I, That I might hereafter be Rich to all eternity!
"Looking unto Jesus." HEB. xii. 2.
LITTLE pilgrim on life's way, Bearing his cross from day to day, When faint and weary, used to say,- Jesus, my Saviour!
2 If Satan tempted him aside, He never on himself relied,
But closer grasped the cross, and cried,- Jesus, my Saviour!
3 And, looking up from what he feared, Though far away his rest appeared, Oh, how the thought his spirit cheered,- Jesus, my Saviour!
4 But rapidly his course was run; The morning saw his setting sun: Thy blood his speedy victory won,- Jesus, my Saviour!
5 And "blesséd," as the Spirit saith, True to his Lord, in life and death, He whispered, with his dying breath,- Jesus, my Saviour!
6 Thus, Lord, direct my youthful way, Thy word to love, Thy law obey; Then shall I praise, thro' endless day, Jesus, my Saviour!
"Jesus.. in favour with God and man."
ET love through all our actions run, And all our words be mild; Each like the blessed Virgin's Son,- That sweet and lovely child.
2 His soul was gentle as a lamb; And as His stature grew, He grew in favour, both with man And God His Father too.
3 Now, Lord of all, He reigns above: Dear Saviour, from Thy throne, Help us to dwell in peace and love, And mark us for Thine own.
"And He .. blessed them." MARK X. 16.
THE children, in their earliest days To Jesus brought, are truly blest; He folds them in His kind embrace, He warms them in His tender breast. 2 One of these happy children, me, Saviour into Thine arms receive : Brought by Thy servants' prayers to Thee, O may I in Thy kingdom live!
3 They tell me Thou art good indeed, And would'st to all Thy grace impart; Lord, place Thy hand upon my head, And bless with faith my youthful heart. 4 Thee may I for my portion choose; To Thee, through life, obedient prove; And now obtain, and never lose, The blessings of my Saviour's love.
"A Friend that sticketh closer than a brother." PROV. Xviii. 24.
THOU Guardian of our youthful days, To Thee our prayers ascend;
To Thee we'll tune our songs of praise, Jesus, the children's Friend.
2 From Thee our daily mercies flow, Our life and health descend;
O save our souls from sin and woe!- Thou art the children's Friend.
3 Teach us to prize Thy holy word, And to its truths attend;
Thus shall we learn to fear the Lord, And love the children's Friend.
4 O may we feel a Saviour's love! To Him our souls commend,
Who left His glorious throne above, To be the children's Friend.
5 Lord, draw our youthful hearts to Thee;
And when this life shall end
Raise us to live above the sky,
With Thee-the children's Friend.
"How much owest thou unto my lord ?" LUKE XVI. 5.
1 JESUS, Lord of life and glory,
Friend of children, hear our lays; Humbly would our souls adore Thee, Sing Thy name in hymns of praise.
