5 Oh, could we make our doubts remove-
Those gloomy doubts that rise,

And see the Canaan that we love,
With unbeclouded eyes:

6 Could we but climb where Moses stood,
And view the landscape o'er,

Not Jordan's stream, nor death's cold flood,
Should fright us from the shore.

242 "We count them happy which endure."

JAMES V. 11.

HAPPY land! O happy land!
Where saints and angels dwell:
We long to join that glorious band,
And all their anthems swell.
But every voice in yonder throng,
On earth, has breathed a prayer;
No lips untaught may join that song,

Or learn the music there.

D.C.M.

Thou heavenly Friend! Thou heavenly Friend!
O hear us when we pray;

Now let Thy pardoning grace descend,

And take our sins away.

Be all our fresh, our youthful days,

To Thy blest service given;

Then we shall meet to sing Thy praise,
A ransomed band in heaven.

243

"Now they desire a better country."
HEB. xi. 16.

[blocks in formation]

"M but a stranger here,
Heaven is my home;
Earth is a desert drear,

Heaven is my home:
Danger and sorrow stand
Round me on every hand;
Heaven is my Father-land,
Heaven is my home.

6.4.6.4.2-6's.4.

2 What though the tempests rage?
Heaven is my home;

Short is my pilgrimage,
Heaven is my home;

And time's wild wintry blast
Soon will be overpast:
I shall reach home at last,
Heaven is my home.

8 There, at my Saviour's side,
Heaven is my home;

I shall be glorified,

Heaven is my home:

There are the good and blest,
Those I love most and best;
And there I too shall rest,
Heaven is my home.

4 Therefore I murmur not,
Heaven is my home;
Whate'er my earthly lot,
Heaven is my home;

And I shall surely stand
There at my Lord's right hand;
Heaven is my Father-land,
Heaven is my home.

"Rejoice in hope of the glory of God."

ROM. V. 2.

1 JOYFULLY, Joyfully, onward we move,

8-10's.

Bound to the land of bright spirits above:
Jesus, our Saviour, in mercy, says, "Come,-
Joyfully, joyfully, haste to your home!"
Soon will our pilgrimage end here below,
Soon to the presence of God we shall go;
Then, if to Jesus our hearts have been given,
Joyfully, joyfully, rest we in heaven!

2 Teachers and scholars have passed on before-
Waiting, they watch us approaching the shore;
Singing to cheer us while passing along-
"Joyfully, joyfully, haste to your home!
Sounds of sweet music there ravish the ear;
Harps of the blessed, your strains we shall hear,
Filling with harmony heaven's high dome :
Joyfully, joyfully, Jesus, we come!

8 Death, with his arrow, may soon lay us low;
Safe in our Saviour, we fear not the blow:
Jesus hath broken the bars of the tomb;
Joyfully, joyfully, will we go home!
Bright shall the morn of eternity dawn;
Death shall be conquered, his sceptre be gone;
Over the plains of sweet Canaan we'll roam.
Joyfully, joyfully, safely at home!

"Suffer little children to come nnto me."

Lo

LUKE Xviii. 16.

ORD, a little band, and lowly,
We are come to sing to Thee;
Thou art great, and high, and holy,
O how solemn we should be!

2 Fill our hearts with thoughts of Jesus,
And of heaven, where He is gone;
And let nothing ever please us,

He would grieve to look upon.

3 For, we know, the Lord of glory
Always sees what children do,
And is writing now the story
Of our thoughts and actions too.
4 Let our sins be all forgiven;

246

1

Make us fear whate'er is wrong;
Lead us on our way to heaven,
There to sing a nobler song.

"The word of the Lord was precious."
1 SAM. iii. 1.

THIS is a precious book indeed!

Happy the child who loves to read!
'Tis God's own word, which He has given
To show our souls the way to heaven.
2 It tells us how the world was made,
And how good men the Lord obeyed;
Here His commands are written too,
To teach us what we ought to do.

3 It bids us all from sin to fly,

Because our souls can never die ;
Points to that world where angels dwell,
And warns us to escape from hell,

8.7.8.7.

L.M.

4 But what is more than all beside,
The Bible tells us Jesus died;
This is its best, its chief intent,
To lead poor sinners to repent.
Then teach us children, blessed Lord,
To read and keep Thy holy word,-
Repent, and have our sins forgiven,
Believe, and follow Christ to heaven.

"When they had read, they rejoiced."
ACTS XV. 31.

[AVE you read the wondrous story
Of the Saviour's life and death,-
How He left His throne of glory,
And for us resigned His breath?
2 May a helpless child appoach Him,
And His tender pity crave;

Will it not be deemed encroaching,-
Will He such a sinner save?

3 Yes, for with compassion beaming
From His kind and tender eye,
While with love His words are teeming,
Hear this blesséd Saviour cry,-

4 "Come and welcome! 'tis my pleasure
Little children to receive;

Those who seek Me find a treasure
Which this world can never give."

8 Lord, I come,-and would surrender
All I am, and have, to Thee,
While I cry, "What shall I render
To the Lord for calling me?"

"The love that God hath to us."
1 JOHN iv. 16.

HERE'S a message of love,

Come down from above,

To invite little children to heaven!

In God's blessed book,

Poor sinners may look,

And see how all sin is forgiven.

For there they may read

How Jesus did bleed,

And die for His dear little ones;
How clean He first makes them,
And afterwards takes them
To be His own daughters and sons,
