5 He hath, with a piteous eye,
Looked upon our misery;
For His, &c.

6 Let us then, with gladsome mind,
Praise the Lord, for He is kind;
For His, &c.

"Do not I fill heaven and earth ?"
JER. Xxiii. 24.

FATHER and Friend! Thy light, Thy love,

Beaming through all Thy works we see:
Thy glory gilds the heavens above,
And all the earth is full of Thee.

2 Thy voice we hear, Thy presence feel,
Whilst Thou, too pure for mortal sight,
Beyond the clouds-invisible,

Reignest the Lord of life and light.

L.M.

8 We know not in what hallowed part
Of the wide heavens Thy throne may be;
But this we know, that where Thou art,
Strength, wisdom, goodness, dwell with Thee.
Thy children shall not faint nor fear,
Justained by this delightful thought,-
ince Thou, their God, art everywhere,
They cannot be where Thou are not.

SONGS of praise the angels sang,

Heaven with hallelujahs rang,
When Jehovah's work begun,
When He spake, and it was done.

Songs of praise awoke the morn
When the Prince of Peace was born;
Songs of praise arose when He
Captive led captivity.

Heaven and earth must pass away,
Songs of praise shall crown that day?
God will make new heavens and earth;
Songs of praise shall hail their birth.
4 Saints below, with heart and voice,
Still in songs of praise rejoice;
Learning here by faith and love,
Songs of praise to sing above.

5 Borne upon their latest breath, Songs of praise shall conquer death; Then, amidst eternal joy,

Songs of praise their powers employ.

"Remember now thy Creator."
ECCL. xii. 1.

EMEMBER, says the word of truth,
Thy great Creator in thy youth;
Hence, in obedience to Thy word,
We would remember Thee, O Lord.
2 We would remember Thee with love,
Like Thy redeeméd saints above;
Thy love demands our highest praise,
And warmest zeal in all Thy ways.
3 We would remember Thee with fear,
Since Thou wilt not the guilty clear;
With filial fear, and holy awe,
Lest we offend against Thy law.

L.M

4 We would remember Thee with joy;
May heavenly peace our minds employ;
Since Thou Thine own dear Son hast given,
To fit us for the joys of heaven.

5

We also would remember Thee,
With thoughts of deep humility;
For all Thy works and ways proclaim
Our meanness, sinfulness, and shame.

6 Thus we, through every future stage
Of blooming youth, or riper age,
Would our Creator bear in mind,
Nor doubt His saving grace to find.

"Thou art a God ready to pardon."
NEH. ix. 17.

то God, who reigns above the sky,

Our Father and our Friend,

To Him let all our vows be paid,

And all our prayers ascend.

2 'Tis He who claims our youthful hearts,
He loves to hear us pray;

By night we'll think upon His love,
And praise Him every day.

3 When we offend against our God,
We'll ask His pardoning love;
'Twas for our sins the Saviour died,
And pleads for us above.

4 With all the love a Father feels,
He pities and forgives;
And though our earthly parents die,
Our heavenly Father lives.

OUR

[blocks in formation]

God is the Father of all,

The Father of mercies and love:

He pities the works of His hands,
Though He reigns in the heavens above.
2 Not a sparrow can fall to the ground,
Without his permission and care;

From such a kind Father and Friend,
Then what have His children to fear?
3 We have nothing to fear, but from sin:
'Tis sin that displeases our God-
When we disobey Thy commands,
Help us, Father, to bow to Thy rod!

"Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty."

REV. iv. 8.

1 THEE we adore, Eternal Lord ;

We praise Thy name with one accord;
Thy saints, who here Thy goodness see,
Through all the world do worship Thee.
2 To Thee aloud all angels cry,

And ceaseless raise their songs on high;
Cherub and seraph, height o'er height,
The heavens and all the powers of light.
3 The apostles join the glorious throng;
The prophets swell the immortal song;
The martyr's noble army raise
Eternal anthems to Thy praise.

4 Thee, Holy, Holy, Holy King;

Thee, the Lord God of Hosts, they sing;
Through earth below, and heaven above,
Resound Thy glory and Thy love.

"Our Father which art in heaven."

OUR

MATT. vi. 9,

Father and our heavenly King,
Accept the notes we raise;

While glory to Thy name we sing,
And everlasting praise!

2 Try kingdom come ;-Thy word fulfil;
Rule in our hearts by love;

And teach us all to do Thy will,
As angels do above.

3 Give us, O Lord, our daily bread;
The food we need, supply;

But chiefly may our souls be fed
With manna from on high.

4 Our hearts from pride and malice free;
In us let mercy live;

As we forgive our enemy,

Do Thou our sins forgive.

6 Lead us, O Lord, from dangerous ways!
Disarm the tempter's power;
And save us, by preserving grace,
From every evil hour.

Thine is the kingdom :-let us be
Obedient subjects, then :

Ascribing power and praise to thee,
For evermore,-Amen!

"We love Him, because He first loved us."

1 JOHN iv. 19.

"

E love Thee, Lord, because when we
Had erred and gone astray,
Thou didst recall our wandering souls
Into the heavenward way;

When helpless, hopeless, we were lost
In sin and sorrow's night,

Thou didst send forth a guiding ray
Of Thy benignant light:

2 Because, when we forsook Thy ways,
Nor kept Thy holy will,

Thou wert not the avenging Judge,
But gracious Father still;
Because we have forgot Thee, Lord,
But Thou hast not forgot,-
Because we have forsaken Thee,
But Thou forsakest not:

8 Because, O Lord, Thou lovedst us
With everlasting love;

Because Thou sent'st Thy Son to die;
That we might live above;

Because, when we were heirs of wrath,
Thou gav'st the hopes of heaven;
We love, because we much have sinned,
And much have been forgiven !

"Children of God by faith in Christ Jesus."

GAL. iii. 26.

CHILDREN of God,-O blessed name!

May we His children prove;

And thus be saved from guilt and shame,
And loved with endless love!

2 'Tis through a lively, active faith
In Christ, our living Head,
We share an interest in His death,
And are His children made.

3 This faith, then, grant to us, O God,
That we may henceforth show

25

1

We are Thy children, bought with blood,
And saved from endless woe.

Thus may we feel an inward peace;
Thee, as our Father, love;

And join, when this short life shall cease,
Thy family above.

"Serve Him with a perfect heart."
1 CHRON. Xxviii. 9.

MY Fatould not only bend the knee,

Father, when I come to Thee,

But with my spirit seek Thy face,-
With my whole heart desire Thy grace.

2 I plead the name of Thy dear Son,
All He has said, all He has done :
O may I feel His love for me,
Who died, from sin to set me free.

3 My Saviour guide me with Thine eye;
My sin forgive, my wants supply;
With favour crown my youthful days,
And my whole life shall speak Thy praise.

4 Thy Holy Spirit, Lord, impart;

Impress Thy likeness on my heart:
May I obey Thy truth in love,

Till raised to dwell with Thee above.
