F. I. D. REFERS TO "FOOD INSPECTION DECISIONS" WHICH ARE ISSUED BY THE BOARD OF FOOD AND DRUG INSPECTION U.S. DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE

F. I. D. 76, ISSUED JULY 3rd, 1907, STATES AS TO COAL TAR COLORS. "The use of any dye, harmless or otherwise, to color or stain a food in the manner whereby damage or inferiority is concealed is specifically prohibited by Law. The use in food for any purpose of any mineral dye or any coal tar dye, except those coal tar dyes hereinafter listed will be grounds for prosecution. Pending further investigations now under way and the announcement thereof, the coal tar dyes hereinafter named, made specifically for use in foods, and which bear the guarantee from the manufacturer that they are free from subsidiary products and represent the actual substance the name of which they bear, may be used in foods. In every case a certificate that the dye in question has been tested by competent experts and found to be free from harmful constituents must be filed with the Secretary of Agriculture and approved by him."

F. I. D. 77, ISSUED SEPT. 25th. 1907

is supplemental to and explains F. I. D. 76. It defines the word "Manufacturer," the form of “Certificates" to be sent to the Department of Agriculture, when submitting 1 lb. samples for certification, and the form of "Guarantee" to be placed on the package of color by the manufacturer.

F. I. D. 77

also states that the certificate of the manufacturer applies only to the particular lot certified, and allows the sale, under certain conditions, of mixtures of certified colors, a 1 lb. sample of each lot mixed having to be submitted to the Department. It states further:

"Those to whom certification is given with respect to their dyes and a lot number assigned should control the sale of such batches so that they may account to the Department of Agriculture by inspection of their books or otherwise for the destination and disposal of

each batch.

"Those using these certified dyes in the preparation of foods and Foodstuffs, must be in a position to substantiate the fact that the dyes so used were of a properly certified character."

It will thus be seen that the Government Officials will have a simple method of obtaining at any time correct information as to who are users of Certified Colors.

The advertising advantage to those using Certified Colors can readily be seen. "Certified Colors" will undoubtedly end the very frequent Colored Candy Poisoning Scare lines in the newspapers, which cannot help being detrimental to the trade.

You, of course, have seen our announcement of January 26th, stating that we are ready to accept orders for Certified Colors.

It must be borne in mind that the "Atlas Colors for Confectioners' Use," which we have been selling, and will continue to sell, uncertified, are made only from combinations of the colors named in F. I. D. 76, and which we purify for certification.

There are practically no other colors sold which could by any manipulation be prepared for certification, and many of them are not the colors mentioned in F. I. D. 76, although so guaranteed. If you do not wish to use Certified Colors, permit us to call your attention to the obvious advantage in using our Uncertified Colors, which being specially prepared for final purification before certification and free from the most objectionable impurities, are therefore the nearest obtainable substitutes for Certified Colors

Georgia's State Chemist Praises Cottolene

J. H. McCandless, State Chemist of Georgia, before a recent gathering of Cotton Seed men, gave emphatic praise to the high quality of Cottolene. He said:

"The sale of this product and the proclamation that it is made of cotton seed oil have done more to bring cotton seed oil truthfully and favorably before the public than anything else in recent history."

Mr. McCandless then pointed out how a pure, refined, vegetable-oil basis, such as is in Cottolene, is the only assurance a woman has of a clean, digestible, cooking product. It seems a positive wonder in the light of all that has lately been said and written, and of what is known of lard, where it comes from, of what it may be made, and how little chance there is to get pure lard, that anyone will continue its use, when pure, sweet and healthful Cottolene can be so easily obtained.
