2 Anthems of equal glory
Ascribe we to the Saviour;
Who liv'd and dy'd,

That we, his bride,
Might live with him for ever.
s Hail co-eternal Spirit!
Thy church's new creator:
The saints he seals,

Their fear dispels,

And gives them a new nature. 4 We laud the glorious Triad, The mystic One in essence; Till call'd to join

The hosts that shine

In his immediate presence.

5 Faithful is He that promis'd, And stands engag'd to save us; The triune Lord

Has pass'd his word,

That he will never leave us.

6 A kingdom he assign'd us
Before the world's foundation:
Thou God of grace,

We give thee praise
For such great consolation.

22.

4-6s. & 4-4s.

1 WE give immortal praise To God the Father's love,

For all our comforts here,
And better hopes above.
He sent his own
Beloved Son,

To die for sins

That we had done.

To God the Son belongs
Immortal glory too,

Who bought us with his blood
From everlasting woe:

And now he lives,

And now he reigns,
And sees the fruit
Of all his pains.

3. To God the Spirit's name,
Immortal worship give,

Whose gracious love and pow'r
Make the dead sinner live.
His work completes

The great design,
And fills the soul
With joy divine.

4 Almighty God, to thee
Be endless honours done,
The undivided Three,
And the mysterious One:
Where reason fails
With all her pow'rs,
There faith prevails,
And love adores,

[blocks in formation]

1 BLEST be the Father and his love,
To whose celestial source we owe
Rivers of endless joy above,

And rills of comfort here below.
2 Glory to thee, great Son of God,
From whose dear wounded body rolls
A precious stream of vital blood-
Pardon and life for dying souls.
3 We give the sacred Spirit praise,
Who in our hearts of sin and woe
Makes living springs of grace arise,
And into boundless glory flow.
4 Thus God the Father, God the Son,
And God the Spirit we adore,-
That sea of life and love unknown,
Without a bottom or a shore.

24.

1 To comprehend the great Three-One
Is more than highest angels can;
Or what the Trinity has done

From death and hell to ransom man.
2 But all true Christians this may boast
(A truth from nature never learn'd)
That Father, Son, and Holy Ghost,
To save our souls are all concern'd.
3 The Father's love in this we find,
He made his Son our sacrifice:

L. M.

The Son in love his life resign'd:
The Spirit of love his blood applies.
4 Thus we the Trinity can praise
In Unity, thro' Christ our King;
Our grateful hearts and voices raise
In faith and love, while thus we sing-
5 Glory to God the Father be,

Because he sent his Son to die :
Glory to God the Son, that he
Did with such willingness comply:
6 Glory to God the Holy Ghost,

Who to our hearts this love reveals :
Thus God Three-One to sinners lost
Salvation sends, procures, and seals.

[blocks in formation]

SPIRIT of Truth, essential God,
Who didst thy ancient saints inspire,
Shed in their hearts thy love abroad,
And touch'd their hallow'd lips with fire;
Our God from all eternity,

World without end we worship thee.

Still we believe, Almighty Lord,

Whose presence fills both earth and
heav'n,

The meaning of the written word
Is by thy inspiration giv'n;
Thou only dost thyself explain
The secret mind of God to man.

3

Come, then, divine Interpreter,
The scriptures to our hearts apply;
For, taught by thee, we God revere,
Him in Three Persons magnify;
And still the Triune-God adore,
Who was, and is, for evermore.

[blocks in formation]

1 GOD is a name my soul adores,
Th' almighty Three, th' eternal One;
Nature and grace with all their pow'rs,
Confess the Infinite Unknown!

2 From thy great Self thy being springs;
Thou art thy own original,

Made up of uncreated things,

And self-sufficience bears them all!

3 Thy voice produc'd the seas and spheres,
Bade the waves roar, and planets shine;
But nothing like thyself appears,
Through all these spacious works of thine.
4 Who can behold the blazing light!
Who can approach consuming flame!
None but thy wisdom knows thy might,
None but thy Word can speak thy Name.

27.

1 HAIL! holy, holy, holy Lord!
Whom One in Three we know ;
By all the heav'nly host ador'd,
By all the church below.

C. M.
