SALVATION IS OF THE LORD. 231. C. M. 1 PLUNG'D in a gulph of dark despair 2 With pitying eyes the Prince of grace He saw, and oh, amazing love! 3 Down from the shining seats above 4 He spoil'd the pow'rs of darkness thus, And brake our iron chains; Jesus has freed our captive souls 5 In vain the baffled prince of hell We, whom he doom'd his endless slaves, 6 O, for this love! let rocks and hills Their lasting silence break! And all harmonious human tongues 7 Angels, assist our sacred joys, But, tho' you raise your highest notes, 1 YE children of God, By faith in his Son, Redeem'd by his blood, And with him made one, This union with wonder And rapture be seen, Which nothing shall sunder, Without or within. 2 This pardon, this peace, Which none can destroy; This treasure of grace, This heavenly joy; The worthless may crave it, It always comes free; The vilest may have it, 'Twas given to me. 3 "Tis not for good deeds, Good tempers, nor frames; From grace it proceeds, And all is the No goodness, no fitness, Expects he from us: This I can well witness, For none could be worse. 4 Sick sinner, expect No balm but Christ's blood: Thy own works reject, The bad and the good. None ever miscarry That on him rely, Tho' loathsome as Mary, Manasseh, or I. 1 WHATEVER prompts the soul to pride, Or gives us room to boast, (Except in Jesus crucify'd) Is not the Holy Ghost. 2 That blessed Spirit omits to speak 3 He seldom moves a man to say, 4 Great are the graces he confers, He gladly dictates, gladly hears, "Ye are complete in Him." Col. ii. 10. 1 WHEN is it Christians all agree, When (nothing in themselves) they see 2 But strife and diff'rence will subsist 3 The infant, and the aged saint, 4 Eternal life's the gift of God; "Tis God himself-the Word! And issues to us through the blood Of Jesus Christ our Lord. 5 We have no life, no pow'r, no faith, We all deserve eternal death; 235. 1 TILL God the Spirit's rising beam 2 Self is the god that he adores, He seeks no healing for his sores C. M. 3 While such at sov'reign mercy spurn, U 4 Jesus, since thou hast made us free, 5 Nothing we plead before our God, 6 Sinner, 'tis only in the Lamb 1 2 3 236. THE Lord on high proclaims "Justice and Mercy are the names "Ye dying souls that sit In darkness and distress, Look from the borders of the pit S. M. Sinners shall hear the sound: Their thankful tongues shall own— Our righteousness and strength are found In thee, O Lord, alone! And see their sins forgiv❜n: God shall pronounce the sinner just, And take the saint to heav'n. |
