And all our raptur'd pow'rs confess That God, our God, is love!
1 YE humble souls, approach your God With songs of sacred praise; For he is good, immensely good, And kind are all his ways.
2 All nature owns his guardian care, In Him we live and move; But nobler benefits declare The wonders of his love.
3 He gave his Son, his only Son, To ransom rebel worms;
'Tis here he makes his goodness known In its diviner forms.
4 To this dear refuge, Lord, we come; "Tis here our hope relies;" A safe defence, a peaceful home, When storms of trouble rise.
1 ETERNAL Wisdom, thee we praise!
Thee the creation sings!
With thy lov'd name, rocks, hills, and seas, And heav'n's high palace rings.
2 Thy hand how wide it spread the sky! How glorious to behold!
Ting'd with the blue of heav'nly dye, And starr'd with sparkling gold. 3 Thy glories blaze all nature round, And strike the gazing sight,
Thro' skies, and seas, and solid ground, With terror and delight.
4 O what stupendous pow'r and skill Shine thro' the worlds abroad! Our souls with vast amazement fill, And speak the builder God.
5 But, O! the wonders of thy grace Sublimer passions move;
Glory divine in Jesu's face
1 THY way, O God! is in the sea; Thy paths we cannot trace; Nor comprehend the mystery Of thy unbounded grace.
2 Here the dark veils of flesh and sense Our captive minds surround, Mysterious deeps of providence
Our wond'ring thoughts confound.
3 When we behold thy awful hand Our earthly hopes destroy,
In deep astonishment we stand, And ask the reason why?
4 As thro' a glass we dimly see The wonders of thy love; How little do we know of thee, Or of the joys above!
5 "Tis but in part we know thy will; We bless thee for the sight:- When will thy love the rest reveal In glory's clearer light?
6 With rapture shall we then survey Thy providence and grace; And spend an everlasting day In wonder, love, and praise.
1 PRAISE to the Lord of boundless might! With uncreated glories bright;
His presence gilds the worlds above,- Th' unchanging source of light and love. 2 "Let there be light!" Jehovah said; And light o'er all the earth was spread; Nature, array'd in charms unknown, Gay with created lustre shone.
3 But in the mind, when lost it lies In shades of ignorance and vice; "Tis God himself whose vivid ray Transforms its midnight into day. 4 Shine, mighty God! with vigour shine On this benighted heart of mine;
And let thy glories stand reveal'd, As in the Saviour's face beheld. 6 My soul, reviv'd by heav'n-born day, Thy radiant image shall display; While all my faculties unite To praise the uncreated Light.
1 HOLY, holy, holy Lord, God the Father and the Word, God the Comforter, receive Blessings more than we can give: Mixt with those beyond the sky, Worshipping the Lord most High, We our hearts and voices raise, Echoing thy eternal praise.
2 One, inexplicably Three, One in grandest Unity;
God, incline thy gracious ear, Us thy lisping children hear! Thee-while man the sinner sings, Angels shrink behind their wings; Prostrate seraphim above Breathe unutterable love.
3 Happy they who ever rest, With thy heav'nly presence blest! They the heights of glory see! Sound the depths of Deity!
Fain with them our souls would vie; Sink as low, and mount as high: Fall, o'erwhelm'd with love, or soar; Shout, or silently adore!
1 WHO can describe the joys that rise Through all the courts of paradise To see a prodigal return,
To see an heir of glory born?
2 With joy the Father doth approve The fruit of bis eternal love;
The Son with joy looks down, and sees The purchase of his agonies.
3 The Spirit takes delight to view The holy soul he form'd anew; And saints and angels join to sing The growing empire of their King.
1 ETERNAL hallelujahs Be to the Father giv'n;
Who lov'd his own
Ere time begun,
And mark'd them out for heav'n.
