Joyful they come,
And wing their way
From realms of day
To Jesus' tomb.

3 Then back to heav'n they fly,
The joyful news to bear:
Hark! as they soar on high,
What music fills the air!
Their anthems say,

"Jesus who bled

"Hath left the dead;
"He rose to-day."

4 Ye mortals catch the sound,
Redeem'd by him from hell;
And send the echo round

The globe on which

Transported cry,

"Jesus who bled

"Hath left the dead

"No more to die."

you dwell ;

5 All hail, triumphant Lord,
Who sav'st us with thy blood!
Wide be thy name ador'd,
Thou rising, reigning God!
With thee we rise,

1

With thee we reign,

And empires gain

Beyond the skies.

LXXXI. L. M. RIPPON'S SELEC.
Christ's Resurrection a pledge of ours.

WHEN I the holy grave survey,

Where once my Saviour deign'd to

I see fulfill'd what prophets say,
And all the powers of death defy.

2 This empty tomb shall now proclaim

How weak the bands of conquer'd death : Sweet pledge, that all who trust his name

Shall rise and draw immortal breath!

3 [Our Surety freed, declares us free, For whose offences he was seiz'd: In his release our own we see,

And shout to view Jehovah pleas'd. 4 Jesus once number'd with the dead, Unseal's his eyes to sleep no more; And ever lives their cause to plead, For whom the pains of death he bore. 5 Thy risen Lord, my soul, behold; See the rich diadem he wears! Thou too shalt bear an harp of Gold, To crown thy joy when he appears. 6 Though in the dust I lay my head, 'Yet, gracious God, thou wilt not leave My flesh forever with the dead,

Nor lose thy children in the grave.

Comfort to such who seek a risen Jesus. Mat.

[ocr errors]

xxviii. 5. 6.

E humble souls, that seek the Lord,
Chase all your fears away:

And bow with pleasure down to sec
The place where Jesus lay.

2 Thus low, the Lord of life was brought;
Such wonders love can do;
Thus cold in death that bosom lay,
Which throb'd and bled for you.

3 A moment give a loose to grief,
Let grateful sorrows rise;

F

And wash the bloody stains away,
With torrents from your eyes.

4 Then dry your tears and tune your songs, The Saviour lives again;

Not all the bolts and bars of death
The conqueror could detain.

5 High o'er the angelic bands he rears
His once dishonour'd head;
And through unnumber'd years he reigns,
Who dwelt among the dead.

6 With joy like his shall ev'ry saint
His empty tomb survey;
Then rise with his ascending Lord,
To realms of endless day.

HIS ASCENSION.

LXXXIII. L. M. WESLEY'S COLLEC.

Christ's Ascension.

Psalm xxiv. 7.

100 UR Lord is risen from the dead, Our Jesus is gone up on high; The powers of hell are captive led, Dragg'd to the portals of the sky. 2 There his triumphant chariot waits And angels chant the solemn lay; "Lift up your heads, ye heavenly gates! "Ye everlasting doors give way!" "Loose all your bars of massy light,

3

“And wide unfold the radiant scene ; "He claims those mansions as his right, "Receive the King of Glory in.” "Who is the King of Glory, who?”

The Lord that all his foes o'ercame, The world, sin, death, and hell o'erthrew, And Jesus is the conq'ror's name,

5 Lo! his triumphant chariot waits,
And angels chant the solemn lay,
"Lift up your heads, ye heav'nly gates!
"Ye everlasting doors give way!"

6 "Who is the King of Glory, who?"
The Lord of boundless power possest,
The King of saints and angels too,
God over all, for ever blest!

HIS INTERCESSION.

LXXXIV. L. M. STEELE.

The Intercession of Christ. Heb. vii. 25.
E lives, the great Redeemer lives,
(What joy the blest assurance gives!)
And now before his father God,
Presents the merit of his blood.

2 Repeated crimes awake our fears,
And justice arm'd with frowns appears;
But in the Saviour's lovely face
Sweet mercy smiles and all is peace.
3 Hence then, ye black despairing thoughts,
Above our fears, above our faults
His powerful intercessions rise,
And guilt removes, and terror dies.
4 In every dark distressful hour,
When sin and satan join their power;
Let this dear hope repel the dart,
That Jesus bears us on his heart.
5 Great Advocate, almighty Friend-
On him our humble hopes depend;
Our cause can never, never fail,
For Jesus pleads and must prevail.

LXXXV. C. M. TOPLADY.

Christ's intercession prevalent. John xvii. 24.
1 WAKE, sweet gratitude, and sing
-Th' ascended Saviour's love;

Sing how he lives to carry on
His people's cause above.

2 With cries and tears he offer'd up
His humble suit below;
But with authority he asks,
Enthron'd in glory now.

3 For all that come to God by him,
Salvation he demands;
Points to their names upon his breast,
And spreads his wounded hands.

4. His sweet atoning sacrifice

Gives sanction to his claim:
"Father, I will that all my saints
"Be with me where I am:

5 "By their salvation, recompense
"The sorrows I endur'd;
"Just to the merits of thy Son,
"And faithful to thy word."
6 Eternal life, at his request,
To every saint is given:
Safety below and after death,
The plenitude of heaven.

7 [Founded on right, thy prayer avails,
The Father smiles on thee;

And now thou in thy kingdom art,
Dear Lord, remember me.

8 Let the much incense of thy prayer
In my behalf ascend;

And as its virtue, so my praise,
Shall never, never end.]
