3 The sins of one most righteous day
Might plunge us in despair;

Yet all the crimes of num'rous years
Shall our great Surety clear.

4 That spotless robe, which he hath wrought,
Shall deck us all around;
Nor by the piercing eye of God

One blemish shall be found.

5 Pardon, and peace, and lively hope
To sinners now are given;

Israel and Judah scon shall change
Their wilderness for heav'n.

6 With joy we taste that manna now,
Thy mercy scatters down;

1

We seal our humble vows to thee,
And wait the promis'd crown.

SHEPHERD.

CXVIII. S. M.

DODDRIDGE.

The security of Christ's sheep. John x. 27, 29.

MY

Y soul, with joy attend,
While Jesus silence breaks;

No angel's harp such music yields, As what my shepherd speaks. 2 "I know my sheep," he cries, "My soul approves them well: "Vain is the treacherous world's disguise, "And vain the rage of hell.

3 "I freely feed them now

"With tokens of my love,
"But richer pastures I prepare,
"And sweeter streams above.

4 Unnumber'd years of bliss
"I to my sheep will give;

5

"And, while my throne unshaken stands, "Shall all my chosen live.

"This tried almighty hand

"Is rais'd for their defence:

"Where is the power shall reach them there? "Or what shall force them thence?"

6 Enough, my gracious Lord, Let faith triumphant cry;

1

My heart can on this promise live,
Can on this promise die.

Shepherd. Psalm xxiii. 1, 3.

WHILE my Redeemer's near,
My shepherd and my guide,
I bid farewell to anxious fear,
My wants are all supply'd.
To ever-fragrant meads

Where rich abundance grows,
His gracious hand indulgent leads
And guards my sweet repose.

: Along the lovely scene

Cool waters gently roll, Transparent, sweet, and all serene, To cheer my fainting soul.

4 Here let my spirit rest;

How sweet a lot is mine!

With pleasure, food, and safety blest;
Beneficence divine!

5 Dear Shepherd, if I stray,

My wand'ring feet restore;
To thy fair pastures guide my way,
And let me rove no more.

6 Unworthy as I am,

Of thy protecting care,

Jesus, I plead thy gracious name,
For all my hopes are there.

THE VINE.

CXX. C. M. TOPLADY.

Vine and the Branches.

John xv. 1, 5.

1 JESUS, immutably the same,

Thou true and living vine,
Around thy all-supporting stem
My feeble arms I twine.

2 Quicken'd by thee, and kept alive,
I flourish and bear fruit:
My life I from thy sap derive,
My vigour from thy root.
3 I can do nothing without thee;
My strength is wholly thine;
Wither'd and barren should I be,
If sever'd from the vine.

4 Upon my leaf, when parch'd with heat, Refreshing dew shall drop,

1

The plant which thy right-hand hath set,
Shall ne'er be rooted up.

Each moment water'd by thy care,
And fenc'd with power divine,

Fruit to eternal life shall bear
The feeblest branch of thine.

JES

WAY.

CXXI. L. M. CENNICK.
Way to Canaan.

ESUS, my all, to heav'n is gone,
He whom I fix my hopes upon;

His track I

see,

and I'll pursue

The narrow way till him I view.

2 The way the holy prophets went, The road that leads from banishment, The King's highway of holiness I'll go, for all his paths are peace. 3 This is the way I long have sought, And mourn'd because I found it not; My grief, my burden long has been, Because I could not cease from sin. 4 The more I strove against its pow'r, I sinn'd and stumbled but the more, "Till late I heard my Saviour say, Come hither, Soul, "I AM THE WAY." 5 Lo! glad I come, and thou, blest Lamb, Shalt take me to thee as I am; My self, my all, to thee I give, Wilt thou the sacrifice receive? 6 Then will I tell to sinners round, What a dear Saviour I have found; I'll point to thy redeeming blood, "BEHOLD THE WAY TO GOD."

And say,

CXXII. S. M. HART.

I am the Way, &c. John xiv. 6.
IAM, saith Christ, the Way.

Now if we credit Him,
All other paths must lead astray,
How fair soe'er they seem.

2 I am, saith Christ, the Truth.

Then all that lacks this test,
Proceed it from an angel's mouth,
Is but a lie at best.

3 I am, saith Christ, the Life.
Let this be seen by faith,
It follows without further strife,
That all besides is death.

4 If what those words aver,
The Holy Ghost apply;

The simplest Christian shall not err,
Nor be deceiv'd, nor die.

ALL IN ALL.

СХХІІ. С. М.

1 COMP

All in all.

TOPLADY.

Col. iii. 11.

OMPAR'D with Christ, in all beside
'No comeliness I see;

The one thing needful, dearest Lord,
Is to be one with thee.

2 The sense of thy expiring love
Into my soul convey:
Thyself bestow; for thee alone
My ALL IN ALL I pray.

3 Less than thyself will not suffice,
My comfort to restore : .

More than thyself I cannot crave; And thou canst give no more. 4 Lov'd of my God, for him again With love intense I'd burn: Chosen of thee 'ere time began, 'I'd chuse thee in return.

5 Whate'er consists not with thy love,
O teach me to resign:

I'm rich to all th' intents of bliss
If thou, O God, art mine.
