TUNE-Songs of Love and Mercy, No. 53.

OH, what has Jesus done for me?

He pitied me-my Saviour!

My sins were great; His love was free:
He died for me-my Saviour!
Exalted by the Father's side,

He pleads for me-my Saviour!
A heavenly mansion He'll provide
For all who love the Saviour !
Jesus, dear Jesus!

Thy name is sweet-my Saviour!
When shall I see Thee face to face,
My wondrous, blessed Saviour?

2 To my weak steps He doth give heed,
He watcheth me-my Saviour!
He helpeth me in every need,
He loveth me-my Saviour!
He heareth, and doth answer send,
To my poor prayer-my Saviour!
And He will keep unto the end
The child that trusts his Saviour!

[blocks in formation]

P:M.

Then with joy and gladness sing,
Happy, ever happy be:

Praises to our heavenly King,
Happy in the Lord.

2 Lord, we bring our hearts to Thee;
Dying love is all our plea,
Thine for ever we would be
Jesus, ever Thine.

Jesus smiles and bids us come;
In His loving arms there's room,
And He'll bear us safely home—
Home above.

3 When we reach that shining shore,
All our sufferings will be o'er;
Then we'll sigh and weep no more
In that land of love;

But in robes of spotless white,
And with crowns of glory bright,
We will range the fields of light,
Evermore.

HQW loving is Jesus, who came from the sky,

In tenderest pity for sinners to die!

His hands and His feet, they were nailed to the tree,
And all this He suffered for sinners like me!

2 How gladly does Jesus free pardon impart,
To all who receive Him by faith in their heart;
No evil befalls them, their home is above,

And Jesus throws round them the arms of His love.

3 How precious is Jesus to all who believe!

And out of His fullness what grace they receive!
When weak He supports them, when erring He guides,
And everything needful He kindly provides.

4 Oh, give then to Jesus your earliest days:
They only are blessed who walk in His ways:

56

In life and in death He will still be their Friend,
For those whom He loves He will love to the end.

TUNE-Sacred Songs and Solos, No. 86.

A

LAS! and did my Saviour bleed?
And did my Sovereign die?
Would He devote that sacred head
For such a worm as I?

2 Was it for crimes that I have done,
He hung upon the tree?
Amazing pity! grace unknown!
And love beyond degree!

3 Well might the sun in darkness hide,
And shut his glories in,

When Christ, the mighty Maker, died
For man the creature's sin.

4 Thus might I hide my blushing face,
While His dear cross appears;
Dissolve my heart in thankfulness,
And melt my eyes in tears.

5 But drops of grief can ne'er repay
The debt of love I owe;
Here, Lord, I give myself away,
'Tis all that I can do.

Watts.

TUNE-Sacred Songs and Solos, No. 44.

C.M., 6 lines.

CHRIST, what burdens bowed Thy head!

Our load was laid on Thee;

Thou stoodest in the sinner's stead,
Didst bear all ill for me.

A victim led, Thy blood was shed;
Now there's no load for me.

2 Death and the curse were in our cup:
O Christ, 'twas full for Thee!

But Thou hast drained the last dark drop,
'Tis empty now for me:
That bitter cup, love drank it up,

Now blessing's draught for me.

3 Jehovah lifted up His rod;

O Christ, it fell on Thee!

Thou wast more stricken of Thy God;
There's not one stroke for me.

Thy tears, Thy blood, beneath it flowed;
Thy bruising healeth me.

4 For me, Lord Jesus, Thou hast died,
And I have died in Thee:

58

Thou'rt risen-my bands are all untied;
And now Thou liv'st in me:

When purified, made white, and tried,
Thy GLORY then for me.

HA

ARK! the voice of love and mercy
Sounds aloud from Calvary;

See it rends the rocks asunder,
Shakes the earth, and veils the sky.
"It is finished!"

Hear the dying Saviour cry.

2 "It is finished!" Oh, what pleasure
Do the wondrous words afford!
Heavenly blessings without measure
Flow to us through Christ the Lord.
"It is finished!"

Saints, the dying words record!

8.7.4.

3 Saints and angels, shout His praises!
Children, join to sing the same!
All on earth, and all in heaven,
Join to sing Immanuel's name !
Hallelujah!

Endless glory to the Lamb!

ALL ye that pass by,

To Jesus draw nigh;

To you is it nothing
That Jesus should die?
Our Ransom and Peace,
Our Surety He is ;
Come, see if there ever
Was sorrow like His!

2 The Lord in the day
Of His anger did lay
Our sins on the Lamb,
Who bore them away.

3 He dies to atone

For sins not His own,
The Father hath punished
For us His dear Son.

4 With joy we approve
The design of His love;
"Tis a wonder below,
And a wonder above.

5 Oh, may we embrace
The ransoming grace
Of Him who hath suffered
And died in our place.

Wesley (alt.).

TUNE-Songs of Love and Mercy, No. 60.

THERE a nuel's veins,

HERE is a fountain filled with blood,

And sinners plunged beneath that flood
Lose all their guilty stains.

2 The dying thief rejoiced to see
That fountain in his day;

And there may I, though vile as he,
Wash all my sins away.

C.M.

3 Dear dying Lamb, Thy precious blood
Shall never lose its power,

Till all the ransomed church of God
Be saved, to sin no more.

4 E'er since, by faith, I saw the stream
Thy flowing wounds supply,
Redeeming love has been my theme,
And shall be till I die.

5 Then in a nobler, sweeter song,
I'll sing Thy power to save,

When this poor, lisping, stammering tongue
Lies silent in the grave.

Cowper.

"HO, who are these beside the chilly wave,

WE

Just on the borders of the silent grave,

Shouting Jesus' power to save,

"Washed in the blood of the Lamb?"

"Sweeping through the gates" of the New Jerusalem,
"Washed in the blood of the Lamb."

2 These, these are they who in their youthful days,
Found Jesus early, and in wisdom's ways
Proved the fulness of His grace,
"Washed in the blood of the Lamb."

3 These, these are they who, in affliction's woes,
Ever have found in Jesus calm repose,
Such as from a pure heart flows,
"Washed in the blood of the Lamb."

4 Safe, safe upon the ever-shining shore,
Sin, pain, and death, and sorrow, all are o'er;
Happy now and evermore,

62

"Washed in the blood of the Lamb."

NOT all the blood of beasts,

On Jewish altars slain,

Could give the guilty conscience peace,
Or wash away its stain.

But Christ, the heavenly Lamb,

Takes all our sins away;

A sacrifice of nobler name,

8.M.

And richer blood than they.
