Heaven bless the isle of Cyprus !"

SHAKESPEARE.

PREFACE.

AFTER three centuries of Turkish oppression, the fair Island which is the subject of this book has come into the possession of England, a power able and willing to do for it what no other could. The Author has proposed to himself to give a brief, but it is hoped fairly complete, account of Cyprus, its inhabitants, climate, and commerce, and besides, a sketch of the chief routes to it, with an epitome of its history and some notice of its antiquities. He has to acknowledge his obligations to the works (among others) named on the other side, especially to the one first mentioned.

MIDDLE TEMPLE, July 22nd, 1878.

F. H. FISHER.
