Hardly, sure, can they be worse, no Who have never heard his name! 3 Could my heart so hard remain,on me977 Pray'r a task and burden prove,......A Ev'ry trifle give me pain,

If I knew a Saviour's love?500 bra 4 When I turn my eyes within,” 19 a All is dark, and vain, and wild; Fill'd with unbelief and sin,

Can I deem myself a child? voorí 5 If I pray, or bear, or read,

Sin is mix'd with all I do;
You that love the Lord indeed,
Tell me, Is it thus with you?
6 Yet I mourn my stubborn will,
Find my sin a grief and thrall;
Should I grieve for what I feel,
If I did not love at all?

7 Could I joy his saints to meet,
Choose the ways I once abhor'd,TM
Find, at times, the promise sweet, 11
If I did not love the Lord?
8 Lord, decide the doubtful case;
Thou who art thy people's sun;'
Shine upon thy work of grace,
If it be indeed begun.

9 Let me love thee more and more, ⠀
If I love at all, I pray ;'

If I have not lov'd before,
Help me to begin to-day.

111. The Child.

1 QUIET, Lord, my froward heart,

Make me teachable and mild,
Upright, simple, free from art,
Make me as a weaned child: ..
From distrust and envy free,
Pleas'd with all that pleases thee.”

!

2 What thou shalt to-day provide,
Let me as a child receive;
What to-morrow may betide,
Calmly to thy wisdom leave:

'Tis enough that thou wilt care, Why should I the burden bear? 3 As a little child relies

On a care beyond his own ;
Knows he's neither strong nor wise,
Fears to stir a step alone:

Let me thus with thee abide,

As my Father, Guard, and Guide.
4 Thus preserv'd from Satan's wiles,
Safe from dangers, free from fears;
May I live upon thy smiles,
Till the promis'd hour appears;
When the sons of God shall prove
All their Father's boundless love.

112. Christ a sure Guide.

1 GUIDE me, O thou great Jehovah, Pilgrim through this barren land;

I am weak, but thou art mighty,
Hold me with thy pow'rful hand..
Bread of heav'n, Bread of heav'n, ¡¡
Feed me till I want no more.

2 Open now the chrystal fountain
Whence the healing streams do flow,
Let the fiery, cloudy pillar,
Lead me all my journey through:
Strong Deliv'rer, strong Deliv❜rer,
Be thou still my strength and shield.
3 When I tread the verge of Jordan,
Bid my anxious fears subside;
Death of deaths, and hell's destruction,
Land me safe on Canaan's side:

Songs of praises, Songs of praises, }
I will ever give to thee.

113. Heavenly Joys on Earth: 12 1 COME, ye that love the Lord, v? And let your joys be known;

Join in a song with sweet accord,
While ye surround the throne.
2 The sorrows of the mind:
Be banish'd from this place;
Religion never was design'd
To make our pleasures less
3 Let those refuse to sing,
Who never knew our God;
But children of the heav'nly King T
Will speak their joys abroad.

4 The men of grace have found! ! Glory begun below;

Celestial fruits on earthly ground, From faith and hope may grow. A 5 The hill of Zion yields

A thousand sacred sweets, i Before we reach the heav'nly fields,' Or walk the golden streets.

6 Then let our songs abound,

And ev'ry tear be dry;

We're marching thro' Immanuel's ground,

To fairer worlds on High.

114. The Offices of Christ.
OIN all the glorious names,
Of wisdom, love, and pow'r,

That mortals ever knew,
That angels ever bore:

All are too mean to speak his worth,
Too mean to set our Saviour forth.

2. But O! what gentle terms,

What condescending ways,
Doth our Redeemer use
To teach his heav'nly grace!

7

I

My soul, with joy and wonder, see › What forms of love he bears for thee. 3 Great Prophet of our God,

Our tongues would bless thy name!
By thee the joyful news

Of our salvation came:

The joyful news of sins forgiv'n,
Of hell subdued, and peace

4 Jesus, our great High Priest,
Offer'd his blood and dy'd;
Thou guilty sinner seek
No sacrifice beside:

with heav'n.

His pow'rful blood did once atone,
And now it pleads before the throne.

5 Thou dear Almighty Lord!
Our Conqu'ror, and our King!
Thy sceptre and thy sword,
Thy reigning grace we sing:

Thine is the pow'r; O may we sit
In willing bonds beneath thy feet!

115. The same.

1 ARRAY'D in mortal flesh,
Lo, the great Angel stands !

And holds the promises

And pardons in his bands:

Commission'd from his Father's throne,
To make his grace to mortals known.

2 Be thou our Counsellor,

Our Pattern, and our Guide!

And thro' this desert land

Still keep us near thy side;

O let our feet ne'er run astray,
Nor rove, nor seek the crooked way.
3 We'd hear our Shepherd's voice,
Whose watchful eye doth keep
Poor wand'ring souls among
The thousands of his sheep:

He feeds his flock, he calls their names,
His bosom bears the tender lambs.
4 To this dear surety's hands,
My soul, commend thy cause;
He answers, and fulfils

His Father's broken laws:

Believing souls now free are set;

For Christ hath paid their dreadful debt.

5 Then let our souls arise,

And tread the tempter down;

Our Captain leads us forth
To conquest and a crown:

March on! nor fear to win the day,
Tho death and hell obstruct the way.

116. Doubts and fears Supprest, or God our Defence

1

MY

from Sin and Satan.

Y God. how many are my fears!!
How fast iny foes increase!
Conspiring any eternal death,
They break my present peace.

2 The lying tempter would persuade
There's no relief in heav'n;
And all my swelling sins appear'
Too big to be forgiv'n.

3 But thou, my glory and my strength,
Shalt on the tempter tread,
Shalt silence all my threat'ning guilt,
And raise my drooping head.

4 Arise, O Lord, fulfil thy grace,
While I thy glory sing;

My God has broke the serpent's teeth,
And death has lost his sting.

5 Salvation to the Lord belongs,

His arm alone can save: 6

Blessings attend thy people here, 9×9 !!
And reach beyond the grave.
