His wrath and justice stand
To guard his holy law;

grace.

And where his love resolves to bless,
His truth confirms and seals the
3 Through all his ancient works
Surprising wisdom shines,
Confounds the powers of hell,

And breaks their curs'd designs;
Strong is his arm, and shall fulfil
His great decrees, his sov'reign will
4 And can this mighty King
Of glory condescend?

And will he write his name,

My Father, and my Friend!"

I love his name, I love his word;

Join all my powers, and praise the Lord.

264. Christ crucified; the Wisdom and Power of God.

I NATURE with

open volume stands,
To spread her Maker's praise abroad;
And every labour of his hands

Shews something worthy of a God. 2 But in the grace that rescu'd man,

[ocr errors]

His brightest form of glory shines; Here, on the cross, 'tis fairest drawn, In precious blood and crimson lines. 3 Here his whole name appears complete; Nor wit can guess, nor reason prove, Which of the letters best is writ,

The power, the wisdom, or the love. 4 Here I behold his inmost heart,

Where grace and vengeance strangely join,
Piercing his Son with sharpest smart,

To make the purchas'd pleasures mine. 5 O! the sweet wonders of that cross

Where God the Saviour lov'd and dy'd!
Her noblest life my spirit draws

From his dear wounds and bleeding side.

6 I would for ever speak his name,
In sounds to mortal ears unknown,
With angels join to praise the Lamb,

I

And worship at his Father's throne.

265. A Song of Praise to the blessed Trinity. GIVE immortal praise to God the Father's love, For all my comforts here, and better hopes above: He sent his own eternal Son

To die for sins that man had done.

2 To God the Son belongs immortal glory too,
Who bought us with his blood from everlasting woe :
And now he lives, and now he reigns,
And sees the fruit of all his pains.

3 To God the Spirit's name immortal worship give,
Whose new-creating power makes the dead sinner
His work completes the great design, [live:
And fills the soul with joy divine.

4 Almighty God, to thee be endless honour done,
The undivided Three, and the mysterious One:
Where reason fails with all its powers,
There faith prevails, and love adores.

266. Adoring Christ.

1 HOSANNA to the King of David's ancient blood:
Behold he comes to bring forgiving grace from
Let old and young attend his way,
And at his feet their honours lay.

[God,

2 Glory to God on high, salvation to the Lamb;

Let earth, and sea, and sky, his wonderous love proclaim;

Upon his head shall honour rest,

And ev'ry age pronounce him blest.

267. For the Love of Christ. 1 COME, dearest Lord, descend, and dwell By faith and love in every breast!

Then shall we know, and taste, and feel,
The joys that cannot be express'd.
2 Come fill our hearts with inward strength;
Make our enlarged souls possess,

And learn the height, and breadth, and length
Of thine unmeasurable grace.

3 Now to the God whose power can do More than our thoughts and wishes know, Be everlasting honours doue,

By all the church, through Christ the Son.

268. Pleading Christ.

1 FATHER, God, who seest in me
Only sin and misery,

See thine own anointed One,
Look on thy beloved Son.
2 Turn from me thy glorious eyes,
To that bloody sacrifice;

To that full atonement made,
To that utmost ransom paid.
3 To the blood that speaks above,
Calls for thy forgiving love;
To the tokens of his death,
Here exhibited beneath.
4 Hear his blood's prevailing cry,
Let thy bowels then reply;
Then through him the sinner see;
Then in Jesus look on me!

269. Lord's Supper.

1 JESUS, dear redeeming Lord,
Magnify thy dying word;

In thine ordinance appear,

Come, and meet thy followers here.
2. In the rite thou hast enjoin'd.
Let us now our Saviour find;
Drink thy blood for sinuers shed,
Taste thee in the broken bread.

3 Thou our sinful hearts prepare,
Thou thy pard'ning grace declare,
Thou that hast for sinners dy'd,
Shew thyself the crucify'd!
4 All the guilt of sin remove,
Fill us with thy heavenly love:
Stamp us with the stamp divine,
Seal us, Lord, for ever thine.

270. The Same.

1 GOD of all-redeeming grace,

By thy pard'ning love compell'd,
Up to thee our souls we raise,
Up to thee our bodies yield.
2 Thou our sacrifice receive,

Acceptable through thy Son;
While to thee alone we live,

While we die to thee alone.

8 Just it is, and good and right, That we should be wholly thine, In thine only will delight,

In thy blessed service join.

4 O that ev'ry thought and word

Might proclaim how good thou art;
Holiness unto the Lord,

Still be written on our heart!

271. The Sume.

བས་་སུ།

1 TOGETHER with these symbols, Lord,
Thy blessed self impart;

And let thy very flesh and blood
Feed the believing heart.

Let us from all our sins be wash'd

In thy redeeming blood;

And let thy spirit be the seal,

That we are sons of God.

3 Come, Holy Ghost, with Jesus' love, Prepare us for this feast;

And let us banquet with our Lord,
And lean upon his breast.

272. The Same.

1 BEHOLD what love the Father hath
On guilty men bestow'd!

That we, poor sinners, sons of wrath,
Should be the sons of God!

2 O! How beyond expression great
The love of Christ doth shine:
'Tis like himself-th' eternal God!
Past knowledge! all divine!
3 Behold! for guilty, guilty man,
The Lord of glory dies;

Lays down his life, them to redeem,
A precious sacrifice!

4 And God the sacrifice accepts,
His wrath is now appeas'd;
He looks to his beloved Son,
And says, I am well pleas'd
5 Now doth the ever blessed Lamb,
Who for his people dy'd,
See of the travail of his soul,
And is well satisfy'd.

6 Now peace and good-will, towards men,
In plenteous streams do flow,
And joy and hope of endless life,
Doth God through Christ bestow.
70! let us then resound the note
Which still prevails above;
And ever sing, with joyful hearts,
The wonders or his love.

273. The Same.

ALL praise to the Lord, all praise is his due, To-day is his word of promise found true;

We, we are the nations presented to God; Well-pleasing oblations through Jesus's blood.
