is apart from, and not blended with the Historical notice of each place, and therefore does not at all interfere with that part of the narrative, delineating those more interesting characteristics which connect each individual remain, with the Historic deeds of England.

Several of the subjects treated upon, have certain reflections appended to them, for the appearance of which it is perhaps necessary to say, that they were in each case committed to paper on the spot which called them forth-and therefore as the genuine impressions of the moment, the author has been unwil ling to efface them.

It is also not to be left unnoticed that the avocation of the author-a literary engagement upon a newspaper-has in many instances prevented even a cursory revision of his pages. Much therefore of hasty diction, independently of error to be found in the volume, must in fairness be attributed to the circumstance he has mentioned.
