A Saviour's love consecrated that holy day afresh, when He rose from the dead on the first day of the week.

Family love makes the holy day delightful in many a working man's home; for then parents who are busy all the six working days of the week, are able on the Sabbath day to speak and hear words of love in their home, as they gather the little ones round them; and they can fulfil the words of Scripture by taking sweet counsel together, and walking to the house of God in company.

Yes it is, as the dear child said, a "day of love," and blessed is every house where love dwells, and the Sabbath is honoured.

LOVE TO JESUS.

WHEN Jesus Christ was here below,
And spread His works of love abroad,
If I had lived so long ago,

I think I should have loved the Lord.

Jesus who was so very kind,

Who came to pardon sinful men,

Who healed the sick, and cured the blind,
Oh, must I not have loved Him then?
But where is Jesus? Is He dead?

Oh, no! He lives in heaven above; "And blest are they," the Saviour said, "Who, though they have not seen Me, love." He sees us from His throne on high, As well as when on earth He dwelt ; And when to Him children cry poor He feels such love as then He felt. And if the Lord will grant me grace,

Much I will love Him and adore ; But when in heaven I see His face,

'Twill be my joy to love Him more.

MARKS OF LOVING CHRIST.

1. IF we love a person, we like to think about him. 2. We like to hear about him.

3. We like to read about him.

4. We like to please him.

5. We like his friends.

6. We are jealous about his name and honour.

7. We like to talk to him.

8. We like to be always with him.

He will bless, and He will hear; Nothing have we then to fear, When we love the Lord.
Wash our man-y sins away, Help us, better eve-ry day Thus to love the Lord.
Faith in Christ, our Saviour, prove; May He gather us a-bove, There to love the Lord.

JOSHUA SPEAKING TO THE ELDERS OF ISRAEL OF GOD'S MERCIES.

GOD'S

ISRAEL.

MERCIES TO AND Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel to Shechem, and called for the elders of Israel, and for their heads, and for their judges, and for their officers; and they presented themselves before God.

And Joshua said unto all the people, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, Your fathers dwelt on the other side of the flood in old time, even Terah, the father of Abraham, and the father of Nachor: and they served other gods.

And I took your father Abraham from the other side of the flood, and led him throughout all the land of Canaan, and multiplied his seed, and gave him Isaac.

And I gave unto Isaac Jacob and Esau: and I gave unto Esau mount Seir, to possess it; but Jacob and his children went down into Egypt.

I sent Moses also and Aaron, and I plagued Egypt, according to that which I did among them: and afterward I brought you out.

And I brought your fathers out of Egypt: and ye came unto the sea; and the Egyptians pursued after your fathers with chariots and horsemen unto the Red sea.

And when they cried unto the Lord, he put darkness between you and the Egyptians, and brought the sea upon them, and covered them; and your eyes have seen what I have done in Egypt: and ye dwelt in the wilderness a long season.

And I brought you into the land of the Amorites, which dwelt on the other side Jordan; and they fought with you and I gave them into your hand, that ye might possess their land; and I destroyed them from before you.

Then Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, arose and warred against Israel, and sent and called Balaam the son of Beor to curse you :

But I would not hearken unto Balaam; therefore he blessed you still so I delivered you out of his hand. And ye went over Jordan, and came unto Jericho: and the men of Jericho fought against you, the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Girgashites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites; and I delivered them into hand. your And I sent the hornet before you, which drave them out from before you, even the two kings of the Amorites; but not with thy sword, nor with thy bow.

And I have given you a land for which ye did not labour, and cities which ye built not, and ye dwell in them; of the vineyards and oliveyards which ye planted not do ye eat.

Now therefore fear the Lord, and serve him in sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt ; and serve ye the Lord.

you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.

And the people answered and said, God forbid that we should forsake the Lord, to serve other gods;

For the Lord our God, he it is that brought us up and bondage, and which did those great signs in our sight, our fathers out of the land of Egypt, from the house of and preserved us in all the way wherein we went, and among all the people through whom we passed:

And the Lord drave out from before us all the people, even the Amorites which dwelt in the land: therefore will we also serve the Lord; for he is our God.-JOSHUA xxiv. 1-18.

THE GOLDEN TEXT.

"Thou shalt remember all the way which the Lord thy God led thee."-Deut. viii. 2.

Subject." Review: God's Mercies to Israel.”– Josh. xxiv. 1-18.

OUTLINE LESSON.

The gathering in chap. xxiii. probably at Shiloh, where the tabernacle was. Another now at Shechem, a very sacred place in Israel's history, see Gen. xii. 6, 7; xxxiii. 20; xxxv. 1-4; Josh. viii. 30-35. Here Joshua reminds them of all God's mercies from the Call of Abraham downwards. But let us take only the mercies in this Book, one for each of the quarter's lessons; and see if God's people now have not the same mercies.

The first column, “BOOK OF JOSHUA," gives the subjects of the twelve lessons; the second column, "MERCIES OF GOD," gives twelve of God's mercies to His people, then and now, each suggested by its corresponding subject,

THE SABBATH DAY.

Boys and girls! Think whether you have received these mercies. If not, it is because you have refused to take them! But some mercies you have had-ah! many. "Life, and breath, and all things," and the offer of all the rest.

"When all Thy mercies, O my God,

My rising soul surveys,
Transported with the view, I'm lost
In wonder, love, and praise."

FOR HOME STUDY.

WHAT TO DO WITH GOD'S MERCIES:

Count them up (only they can't

all be counted!)...

Rom. xii. I.

"THY WILL BE DONE!"

HE sendeth sun, He sendeth shower;
Alike they're needful for the flower;
And joys and tears alike are sent
To give the soul fit nourishment :
As comes to me or cloud or sun,
Father, Thy will, not mine, be done!
Can loving children e'er reprove
With murmurs whom they trust and love?
Creator, I would ever be

A trusting, loving child to Thee!

As comes to me or cloud or sun,
Father, Thy will, not mine, be done!
Oh, ne'er will I at life repine!
Enough that Thou hast made it mine;
When falls the shadow cold of death,
I yet will sing with parting breath:
As comes to me or cloud or sun,

Father, Thy will, not mine, be done.

THE "THY WILL BE DONE" SPIRIT. SUSIE wanted to join a pic-nic; she wanted to go very much indeed. Her mother knew it. She was sorry not to let her go, but there were good reasons why Susie should stay away. Susie asked her mother, and her

mother said:

"No, Susie, you cannot go."

Mrs. Barnes expected to see a sorrowful disappointment in her daughter's face, instead of which she bounded away, singing merrily as she went.

"I was afraid of seeing you grievously disappointed," said her mother, much relieved by her daughter's behaviour.

"I have got the Thy will be done' spirit in my heart, dear mother," said the child, sweetly. It is a spirit which would wipe away many a tear.

A POOR man was hung on the gallows some time ago for the awful crime of murder. What do you think he said was the first step to his getting into crime? It was breaking the Sabbath. Had he kept to the Sabbath-school, instead of wandering in the fields amongst bad companions, how different might have been his end! "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy."

A SUNDAY SCHOLAR'S HYMN:

IF I would be an angel,

And with the angels stand,
Singing the Saviour's praises,
In yonder happy land;

I must obey the precepts,
Which He hath clearly given
To guide my wandering footsteps
Unto the path of heaven.

He says that I must love Him,

With mind, and heart, and soul;
That every thought and action
Must yield to His control;
That, if I humbly ask Him,
He'll pardon every sin,
And by His grace will help me,

Eternal life to win.

He says He knows my trials,
And my temptations too;
That every secret sorrow
Is open to His view;
And promises to keep me
In every trying hour
Of sorrow, sin, or danger,
If I but trust His power.

And when this life is over,

He'll take me as His own, To stand among the angels,

Before His Father's throne. Then I shall be an angel, And glad hosannas sing To Jesus Christ, my Saviour, And heaven's eternal King.
