OWING to the number of examinations which include among their subjects Précis-writing or Indexing, or both, it is obvious that there must always be a large demand for a work on these subjects. Such a text-book must exemplify the modern style of official correspondence, if it is to be of practical use, for it is of little avail to the student to work exercises in a style of correspondence which has become more or less obsolete. Correspondence, dating from fifty years back, may be to some extent useful for purposes of practice; but official style, like everything else, alters, and the student has a right to demand that he be given the latest examples of it. It is absolutely necessary for him to receive a thorough preparation in matter similar to that which will be set in his examination. To satisfy this requirement has been the object of this book. All the correspondence included in this series is of the most recent date obtainable.
