BOSTON TRANSCRIPT: A GREAT COOK BOOK. There is apparently no end to the making of cook-books. The largest, and we assume from the authorship, one of the most important issues in this line of literature, is "The Cook-Book by Oscar of the Waldorf," Oscar being Oscar Tschirky, maitre d'hotel of the most aristocratic hotel in New York. It may be imagined that it is not specially prepared to meet the necessities of the ordinary housekeeper, or for the dwellers in flats. Nevertheless, even these can learn from its immense collection of recipes and suggestions, which fill nine hundred large quarto pages. There is hardly anything in the whole domain of cookery that is not touched upon. In the beginning the author makes a few suggestions with regard to the kitchen, gives instructions as to how a dinner should be served, the wines appropriate to each course, and a list of fish and game in their season. The volume, which is printed by The Werner Company, is a handsome specimen of book-making, printed in large clear type, and bound in strong canvas covers.

"Napoleon from Corsica to St. Helena " is a superb volume. The text is by the noted Napoleonic scholar, John L. Stoddard, while the portraits are by such celebrated artists as Meissonier, Delaroche, David and Gerard. The battle-scenes are by Vernet, Roger, Steuben, Gros, Gerome, Richardson, Prudhon, Bellange, Detaille, and others. It contains pictures of all Napoleon's marshals and generals, his relatives, also all the famous places in which Napoleon lived as Emperor, and of the monuments erected to perpetuate his brilliant achievements on the battlefields of Europe. This work pictures every important episode in Napoleon's wonderful career and all the important personages associated with him.

of their last interview before the unhappy Empress was divorced. Following in its proper order comes the marriage scene with Marie Louise, the burning of Moscow, the fatal Waterloo, many scenes in the "Hundred Day" campaign, the exile and death at St. Helena, all of which are portrayed with the utmost fidelity, and every photograph is described by the famous Napoleonic scholar and lecturer, John L. Stoddard.

The pictures themselves constitute a priceless collection, so truthfully do they depict the various scenes it is their mission to represent. The accompanying descriptions by Mr. Stoddard constitute a truthful history of the world's greatest hero. Both the Photographs and the material for the descriptive articles are said to have cost immense sums of money to secure. The galleries of the Old World have been visited, and the reproductions are from the choicest art gems to be found, while the descriptions furnished by Mr. Stoddard have cost him many months of research among the archives of France, seeking new light on Napoleon's career"

-The Army and Navy Register. Napoleon is now nothing less than the world's greatest hero, and so great is the demand for works pertaining to his career that many publications are being brought out showing some new phase of his career. The finest of these appears in the magnificent collection of pictures called "Napoleon from Corsica to St. Helena," in which every event of the "Little Corporal's" life is shown.

-The Portland Oregonian.

JOHN L. STODDARD, Famous Traveler and Lecturer, describes each picture with a foot-note which adds immensely to the interest and value of the work. From an artistic and educational point of view it leaves nothing to be desired.

NAPOLEON

BY FREDERIC MASSON

Translated from the French by J. M. HOWELL.

LOVER AND ....HUSBAND

[graphic]

This handsome volume sketches the youth of Napoleon Bonaparte, and shows clearly the influences that, early in his notable career, gave him such prominence in the world's history. Mr. Masson makes a "revelation" of this great man from the standpoint of his relations to the female sex, and presents authentic documents to prove that Napoleon was a susceptible lover, and that feminine associations influenced him largely, from his youth to the day of his death at St. Helena. The story of his meeting with Josephine de Beauharnais and the subsequent marriage is told in a very charming way. The marriage contract was dated March 8, 1796, and on the following day the marriage was celebrated by a civil officer. Two days later Napoleon left to join the army of Italy. The subsequent divorce was brought about by questions of policy, and by false insinuations of Fouché and designing women.
