SERMONS BY A LAY HEAD-MASTER BY HELY HUTCHINSON ALMOND M. A. ΟΧΟΝ HEAD-MASTER OF LORETTO SCHOOL WILLIAM BLACKWOOD AND SONS MDCCCLXXXVI All Rights reserved PREFACE. THESE Sermons were delivered under somewhat peculiar circumstances, which seem to me to have a bearing on the general question of religious teaching and common worship in boardingschools. About two-thirds of the parents of the boys at Loretto are Presbyterians; but the only religious services which any of them as a rule attend, are those of the school chapel. These services consist, on Sunday mornings, of a somewhat shortened form of the usual Sunday services of the Episcopal Churches of England and Scotland, considerable latitude being exercised in the choice of Psalms and Lessons; and on Sunday evenings of a short liturgical service, compiled from various sources, without a sermon. |
