PREFACE.

THE First Volume of the DRAMA is now completed, and as it has been a custom "from time immemorial," (though we think it would be much more "honoured in the breach than the observance,") to return thanks to the public for their past encouragement, and to solicit their future patronage and support, we, with the highest feelings of true gratification, hasten to fulfil that task.

It is with pride that we refer to the contents of this our first-born, and we think we may safely say, without having the charge of egotism and selfsufficiency laid to our door, that there is no publication whatever, at the price now in existence, which contains so great, or so excellent a variety of interesting and valuable articles, although all devoted to one subject-the DRAMA! Indeed, it has been our chief study to render the Miscellaneous department of the work a Miniature Cabinet of the choicest scraps relative to the Histrionic D Art.

"The Imitation of LIFE, the Mirror of MANNERS, the Representation of TRUTH." And, indeed, aided as we have been by the most excellent correspondents and contributors, there has been nothing left for us, or, we trust, our readers, to wish for.

With respect to our THEATRICAL INQUISITION, we have been anxious to afford the Dramatic

Public, a very comprehensive, and, as far as laid 1055866

in our power, correct view of the STAGE in all its branches, so as to give the devotees to Theatrical subjects, and the profession itself, every information that could possibly be obtained (consistent with the size and price of the work,) and, at the same time, including as much amusement as the nature of the subject would admit of,

To conclude, we, in our own name, as well as in that of the Proprietors, acknowledge the debt due to the dramatic world for their animating and flattering support; the best acquittance of which will, it is presumed, be to continue to deserve it; and in the presumption that we shall do so, we are strongly upheld by the multiplicity, both of our external and internal rescources, which fully sanctions in us the promise, that our future merit shall even improve its title to their countenance and protection; for we pledge ourselves that our future volumes shall not manifest any departure from the principle and spirit which first recommended "The Theatrical Pocket Magazine" to notice, but each shall appear with that splendour of embellishment, and superior elegance of typographical execution, which distinguish it from every periodical work of a similar description.
