THE intention of this selection is, by means of the pieces it contains (most of which should be got by heart, to form the minds of children to humanity and benevolence, and contribute to their general improvement; and, for this purpose, nothing is inserted which contains either words or ideas above their comprehension; for no error is more common, and yet more dangerous, than to teach children by rote what they cannot understand: the infant mind is thus oppressed by a load of words, like seed which is smothered by too great a weight of earth.
