AMERICAN MYSTICAL INTER FOLIA D. APPLETON AND COMPANY NEW YORK MCMXXVII PREFACE Some years ago Anna Hempstead Branch, Pauline F. J. Brower and another considered assembling a volume of American Mystical Verse. The book was to follow the principle of the Oxford Book of English Mystical Verse, that is, selection was to be made from among those poets alone whose expression touched toward that heightened perception, that enlargement of vision and level of being, which is so variously denominated. The death of Mrs. Brower prevented the carrying out of this project, which has now been so beautifully achieved by Irene Louise Hunter, who was a young poet and mystic of Riverside, California. Miss Hunter died on her birthday anniversary, July 1, 1924, on the day on which the letter was dated accepting for publication her collection. The work was done over a period of two years, and chiefly from the bed to which a painful illness confined her.
