WILEY & PUTNAM,

161 BROADWAY, & 35 PATERNOSTER ROW,

LONDON.

1840.

Entered according to Act of Congress in the year 1840,

By LEONARD SCOTT,

In the Clerk's Office of the District Court for the South

ern District of New-York.

PUBLISHERS' PREFACE.

DC 267 C3

The following pages are a republication of a paper from a recent periodical, to which work, as it is there intimated, they were communicated from "a distinguished source" which the reader can be at no loss to designate. The authentic character and value of its statements and views, the absence of reliable information on the general subject to which it relates, and the interest which must attach to its personal narrative and anecdotes respecting the present able monarch on the throne of France-especially in reference to his former travels in this country-have induced the present publishers, for the benefit of the large class of readers to whom it would probably be more acceptable in the present mode of publication, thus to reproduce it in an extended and embellished form.

May, 1840.
