the rouleaux and borderings are of

silk. The fronts and back of the

upper skirt form distinct parts. The
former are open, rounded, and
slightly hollowed-out at the sides;
they are united also by five bands
with silk bows. The back portion

of the skirt is deeper than the
front; it forms several large plaits,
and has a scalloped flounce, which
is bound with silk, and surmounted
by four bands. The full bouffant is
edged with double bands, and at-
tached to the fronts by groups of
silk bows with single floating ends.
Bows trim the corsage. The scal-
loped bretelles are bound with silk,
and terminate at the back of the
waist in a large group of bows. The
pointed basques are also scalloped.

confined by a ceinture, which fastens at the back beneath a group of bows. Large square basques. Agnes Sorel sleeves; they are very deep; the outer edges are fastened to the back of the body nearly as far as the level of the waist; but in front they are quite loose. These sleeves cover the real armholes, through which the sleeves of the dress are passed. Embroid-skirt are cut in points and edged with lace. At each side is a ered trimming; the narrow bands that pass around the neck form points at the front and back. Silk buttons. Cambric collar and undersleeves. White straw bonnet, trimmed with sky-blue ribbons, pink roses, and black lace.

The large bouffant is caught up at each side by two loops and a single floating end of violet ribbon. The casaque is princess-shaped, with a low, square corsage and pointed basques; these are left open in front, are rounded off toward the sides, and form short plaits at the back of the waist. The sleeves have engageante ruffles. All the plaitings, bands, bows and buttons are of violet silk. White lace chemisette and undersleeves.

The Cambridge jacket is also of crêpeline; it is double-breasted, and fastened by a double row of blue buttons. The sleeves are large, open, and very deep. Revers, collar, and bias bands of foulard. Chemisette and undersleeves of muslin and lace. White lace hat, trimmed with blue ribbons, daisies, and a blue feather.

Fig. 22.-Dress of pale-buff Japanese poplin. The round skirt has three small flounces; these have no fullness, and are surmounted by narrow bias bands of maize silk. The upper flounce is headed by a double ruching of the material, bound 'with silk. The second skirt has a rounded tablier and deeper tunic, cut in two large points. Two shorter and square pieces fall at the back, and each is draped in the centre. Heart-shaped corsage, with pointed basques; the open space at the back is filled in with a plaiting of silk. Coat-sleeves. Cuffs, bands, and buttons of maize-colored silk. Embroidered muslin collar and undersleeves.

Fig. 23.-Chambray costume. This is of plain white, and white striped with blue. The round skirt has a bias, striped flounce, the points of which fall upon a narrow white plaiting; the box-plaited heading is also white, but the fold is striped. Close-fitting casaque; the open skirt is composed of alternate widths and revers of the plain and striped materials. The latter are bias, and all are rounded. Large bias cuffs finish the straight sleeves. The half-low corsage has a loosely knotted fichu of white muslin. Trimming of narrow blue bands, and Mechlin lace ruffles. Chemisette and undersleeves of Swiss muslin and lace. Muslin cap, with lace ruffles, loops, and floating ends of blue ribbon.
