Chorus.

Sign the pledge, 'twill prove a blessing
Fruitful unto thee;

"Tis a record made in heaven,
Sign it and be free.

2 Many a brother, tried and tempted,
Needs our help once more;
Fling aloft the Temp'rance signal,
Wave him toward the shore.

3 Reach the land to save the fallen,
Thousands need our aid;

82

Speak a word the weak to strengthen,
Urge, constrain, persuade.

4 Wave aloft the Temp'rance banner,
Wave it high and higher;

Keep the signal brightly flashing,
Like a beacon fire.

"Lend a helping hand."

HEN cheerful we meet in our pleasant home,
And the song of joy is swelling,

Do we pause to think of the tears that flow
In sorrow's lonely dwelling?

Chorus.

Let us lend a hand

To those who are faint and weary,
Let us lend a hand

To those on the pilgrim way.

2 How many a heart in this world of ours,
That is chill'd by want and sadness,
Could be warm'd to love by a genial word,
Or a welcome smile of gladness!

3

Let us lend a hand, &c.

Be willing to stand with an out-stretch'd hand,
To relieve a weary brother;

And the store we have, be it e'er so small,
Go share it with one another,

Let us lend a hand, &c.

4 Remember the poor, was the great command
Of the Gentle, Pure, and Holy;

For the choicest fruit, and the richest grain,
Are found among the lowly.
Let us lend a hand, &c.

B

FANNY CROSBY.

"Be Kind to Ane Anither."

E kind to ane anither, lads!

Be kind to ane anither!

Remember, as you wend thro' life,
That ev'ry man's a brither!

When cares o'ertake him dinna stan'
And hum, an' ha, and swither;
But like a man, put forth your han',
And help a fallen brither.

Chorus.

Be kind to ane anither, lads!
Be kind to ane anither!

And like a man, put forth your han',
To save a fallen brither.

2 An honest heart may whiles gae wrang,
The wisest head may blunder !

But when you tell them o' their faults,
It need na be wi thunder.

The light'ning glance o' angry looks,
A gentle heart may wither;

But put him richt with wisdom's light—
Be kind to ane anither.

Be kind, &c.

3 When trav❜lling o'er life's rugged road,
A friend may sigh in sadness,
But try to help him wi' his load,
And cheer his heart wi' gladness.

And guard wi' care the souls we love,
In maiden, wife, or mither;

And like a man, put forth your han',
To save a fallen brither.

Be kind, &c.

"Only an Armour-bearer."

NLY an armour-bearer firmly I stand,

ON

Waiting to follow at the King's command, Marching, if "Onward" shall the order be. Standing by my Captain, serving faithfully. Hear ye the battle cry, "Forward" the call, See, see, the faltering ones: backward they fall; Surely my Captain may depend on me, Though but an armour-bearer I may be.

2 Only an armour-bearer now in the field, Guarding a shining helmet, sword, and shield, Waiting to hear the thrilling battle cry,

66

Ready then to answer, Master, here am I."
Hear ye the battle cry! &c.

3 Only an armour-bearer, yet may I share
Glory immortal, and a bright crown wear;
If in the battle to my trust I'm true,

Mine shall be the honours in the Grand Review.
Hear ye the battle-cry! &c.

"Dare to be a Daniel."

TANDING by a purpose true,

Heeding God's command,

Honour them the faithful few!

All hail to Daniel's band!

P. P. BLISS.

Dare to be a Daniel ! dare to stand alone! Dare to have a purpose firm; dare to make it known!

2 Many mighty men are lost,

Daring not to stand,

Who for God had been a host
By joining Daniel's Band!
Dare to be a Daniel, &c.

3 Many giants, great and tall,
Stalking through the land,
Headlong to the earth would fall,
If met by Daniel's Band!

Dare to be a Daniel, &c.

4 Hold the gospel banner high!

On to victory grand !

Satan and his host defy,

And shout for Daniel's Band!

Dare to be a Daniel, &c.

P. P. BLISS.

"Wine is a Mocker."

INE is a mocker, strong drink is raging; and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise. Woe unto them that rise up early in the morning that they may follow strong drink, that continue until night till wine inflame them.

Woe unto him that giveth his neighbour drink, that puttest thy bottle to him, and makest him drunken also.

The drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty; and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags.

Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without a cause? who hath redness of eyes?

They that tarry long at the wine.

They that go to seek mixed wine.

Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, when it moveth itself aright.

At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder.

87 "I will Arise" (The Drunkard's Resolve).

WILL arise and go to my Father, and will say

unto Him

Father, I have sinned against Heaven and before Thee,

And am no more worthy to be called Thy son..

CRYSTAL SPRING HYMNS AND SONGS.

8

[ocr errors]

"The Crystal Spring."

IVE me a draught from the crystal spring,
When the burning sun is high;

When the rocks and the woods their shadows fling;
Where the pearls and the pebbles lie.

2 Give me a draught from the crystal spring,
When the cooling breezes blow.

When the leaves of the trees are withering,
From the frost and the fleecy snow.

3 Give me a draught from the crystal spring,
When the wintry winds are gone;

When the flowers are in bloom, and the echoes ring From the woods o'er the verdant lawn.

4 Give me a draught from the crystal spring,
When the ripening fruits appear:

When the reapers the song of the harvest sing,
And plenty has crowned the year.

"Bright Crystal Water."

T. HASTINGS.

BRIGHT crystal water, sparkling and free,

Dancing and leaping so joyously.

Bright Crystal water, foaming in glee,
That is the best drink for you and for me.
2 Pure laughing water, bursting to light,
In crystal fountain-beautiful sight!
Gurgling in coolness down in the glen,
Best drink of all drinks, O drink, drink again.
3 Soft is its rippling o'er mossy stones,
Making sweet music 'neath the pine cones;
Now it grows bolder, dashing along-
Best drink of all drinks, O praise it in song.
4 Health in its coolness, nerve in its light,
Brain clear and tranquil, true steady sight:
Sound mind to reason, heart light and free.
Best drink of all drinks for you and for me.
