5 Praise God, from whom all blessings flow,
Praise Him, all creatures, here below!
Praise Him above, ye heavenly host!
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost!

SUN

Otterbourne.

BISHOP KEN.

UN of my soul, Thou Saviour dear,
It is not night if Thou be near;
Oh! may no earth-born cloud arise
To hide Thee from Thy servant's eyes!
2 When the soft dews of kindly sleep
My wearied eyelids gently steep,

Be my last thought, how sweet to rest
For ever on my Saviour's breast.
3 Abide with me from morn till eve,
For without Thee I cannot live:
Abide with me when night is nigh,
For without Thee I dare not die!
4 If some poor wandering child of Thine
Have spurned, to-day, the voice divine;
Now, Lord, the gracious work begin ;
Let him no more lie down in sin!

4 Watch by the sick, enrich the poor
With blessing from Thy boundless store!
Be every mourner's sleep to-night
Like infant's slumbers, pure and light!
6 Come near and bless us when we wake,
Ere through the world our way we take,—
Till, in the ocean of Thy love,

We lose ourselves in heaven above.

Evensong.

KEBLE

HROUGH the day Thy love has spared us,

Now we lay us down to rest:

Through the silent watches guard us,

Let no foe our peace molest.

Jesu, Thou our Guardian be;

Sweet it is to trust in Thee.

2 Pilgrims here on earth, and strangers,
Dwelling in the midst of foes,
Us and ours preserve from dangers

In Thine arms may we repose;
And, when life's short day is past,
Rest with Thee in heav'n at last.

KELLY.

EAD, kindly light, amid th' encircling gloom,
Lead Thou me on;

The night is dark, and I am far from home,
Lead Thou me on.

Keep Thou my feet; I do not ask to see
The distant scene; one step enough for me.
2 I was not ever thus, nor prayed that Thou
Should'st lead me on;

I loved to choose and see my path; but now
Lead Thou me on.

:

I loved the garish day, and spite of fears,
Pride ruled my will remember not past years.
3 So long Thy power hath blest me, sure it still
Will lead me on,

O'er moor and fen, o'er crag and torrent, till
The night is gone,

And with the morn those angel faces smile,
Which I have loved long since, and lost awhile.

"O Praise God in His Holiness."

OH, praise God in His Holiness, praise Him in

the firmament of His pow'r, praise Him in

His noble acts; praise Him according to His excellent greatness: praise Him in the sound of the trumpet; praise Him upon the lute and harp, praise Him in the cymbals and dances: praise Him upon the strings and pipe. Let ev'ry thing that hath breath praise the Lord.

290 "Comfort the Soul of Thy Servant." (From Anthem, "Be merciful.")

COMFORT, O Lord, the soul of Thy servant, for

291

MY

unto Thee do I lift up my soul. Psalm lxxxvi. 4.

"My Song shall be of Mercy."

Y song shall be of mercy and judgment; unto
Thee, O Lord, unto Thee will I sing.

O let me have understanding in the way, the way of godliness.

When wilt Thou come unto me?

I will walk in my house with a perfect heart.

Psalm ci. 1, 2.

292

"O Lord, my God."

LORD, my God, O Lord, my God,

Hear Thou the prayer Thy servant prayeth ;

Have thou respect unto his prayer,
Hear Thou in heav'n Thy dwelling-place,

And when Thou hearest, Lord, forgive.

293

"O Praise the Lord."

PRAISE the Lord, for it is a good thing to sing praises, to sing praises unto our God; Yea, a joyful and pleasant thing it is to be thankful. Great is the Lord, and great is His pow'r. Yea, and His wisdom is infinite.

Psalm cxlvii. 1.

[merged small][ocr errors][merged small]

HOU, Lord, by strictest search hast known
My rising up, my lying down,

My secret thoughts are known to Thee,
Known long before conceiv'd by me;
Thine eye my heel and path surveys,
My public haunts and private ways,
Thou know'st what 'tis my lips would vent,
My yet unutter'd words' intent.

2 Surrounded by Thy power I stand,
On ev'ry side I find Thy hand;
O skill, for human reach too high,
Too dazzling bright for mortal eye.
O could I so perfidious be

To think of once deserting Thee,
Where, Lord, could I Thy influence shun,
Or whither from Thy presence run?

295

"I heard a Voice."

I HEARD a voice from heaven saying unto me;

Write from henceforth, blessed are the dead which die in the Lord, ev'n so saith the Spirit, for they rest from their labours.

296

"O Lord we Trust."

LORD we trust alone in Thee, alone in Thee

we trust.

297

O

"O how Amiable."

HOW amiable are Thy dwellings, Thou Lord of Hosts, my soul hath a desire and longing to enter into the House of the Lord. My heart and my flesh rejoice in the living God: Blesed are they that dwell in Thy house, they will alway be praising Thee, Hallelujah. Psalm lxxxiv, 1, 2.

298

"Lord for Thy Tender Mercies' Sake." ORD, for Thy tender mercies' sake, lay not our sins to our charge, but forgive that is past and give us grace to amend our sinful life: To decline from sin and incline to virtue, that we may walk with a perfect heart before Thee, now and evermore.
