HELP

St. Stephen's.

ELP us to help each other, Lord,
Each other's burdens bear :
Let each his friendly aid afford,

To sooth his brother's care.
2 Help us to build each other up;
Help us ourselves to prove;

Increase our faith, confirm our hope,
And perfect us in love.

GENERAL HYMNS AND SONGS.

Trust in God, and do the right.

COURAGE, brother, do not stumble,

Though thy path be dark as night:
There's a star to guide the humble ;
"Trust in God, and do the right."

Do the right, do the right,
"Trust in God, and do the right."
2 Let the road be rough and dreary,
And its end far out of sight,
Foot it bravely, strong or weary,
"Trust in God, and do the right."

3 Perish policy and cunning!

Perish all that fears the light!
Whether losing, whether winning,
"Trust in God, and do the right."

4 Trust no party, sect, or faction:
Trust no leaders in the fight;

But in every word and action
"Trust in God, and do the right."

5 Simple rule, and safest guiding, Inward peace and inward might, Star upon our path abiding,

"Trust in God, and do the right."

6 Some will hate thee, some will love thee, Some will flatter, some will slight; Cease from man, and look above thee, "Trust in God, and do the right."

O the Temp'rance standard rally,
All the friends of human kind!

Snatch the devotees of folly,
Wretched, perishing, and blind.
Kindly tell them

How true comfort they may find.
2 Bear the blissful tidings onward,
Bear them all the world around,
Let the myriads thronging downward
Hear the sweet and blissful sound.
And obeying,

In the paths of peace be found.

3 Plant the Temperance standard firmly,
Round it live, and round it die,
Young and old defend it sternly,
Till you gain the victory.
And all nations

Hail the happy jubilee !

DR. JABEZ BURNS.

IN

N the world's dispersing darkness,
Work on, brothers, as ye may;
Light is breaking in around us,
Work while it is yet to-day.

2 Through the shadows disappearing,

Shines the peaceful, future cheering,

All things whisper in our hearing,
Work while it is yet to-day.

3 Craft of creed, and cry of faction
Plague us, pain us, on our way;
But with spirits strong for action,
Work while it is yet to-day.

25

4 Brothers, work on, though derided;
By the light of love still guided,
Work with spirits undivied,

Sacred truth will be our stay.

5 Work as if the world for ever

Hung upon our life's endeavour;
As the clouds and shadows sever,
Time our actions will display;
Let us work while 'tis to-day.

"The Temperance Lifeboat."

GEORGE HUME.

BRAVELY launch the Temp'rance lifeboat,

On the stormy sea of life!

Come, ye strong and daring, man her,
Fearless in the tempest strife,

Speed her o'er the angry billows,

Safely steer where rocks are toss'd, Guide her firmly 'mid the breakers, Save the sinking ere they're lost.

Chorus.

Bravely launch the Temp'rance lifeboat,
On the stormy sea of life!
Come, ye strong and daring, man her,
Fearless in the tempest strife.

2 Men of ev'ry age and station,
Struggle in the foaming tide,
If you haste not to their rescue,
If their ruin you deride,

Who will help and what can save them
From the dark engulfing wave?
Onward speed the Temp'rance lifeboat,
Precious souls from death to save!

Bravely launch, &c.

3 You are brave, and wise, and gifted,
You can row both safe and fast,
You can steer amid temptation,
Sunken rock, or stormy blast;
Kindle too the lighthouse beacon,
Flash its rays across the wave,

You may warn and guide the drifting,
Save the drunkard, save, Oh save!

26

Bravely launch, &c.

W. J. HARVEY

Winchester.

DRUNKARDS are dying day by day,

Thousands on thousands pass away :

O Christians, to their rescue fly,
And seek to save them ere they die.

2 Wealth, labour, talents freely give
That those now perishing may live ;
What hath your Saviour done for you,
And what for them will ye not do?

3 O Spirit of the Lord, go forth,
Call in the south, awake the north;
In every clime, from sun to sun,
May drunkards to Thy fold be won.

27

I

Melcombe.

N God's unchanging word there stands,
Inscrib'd by more than mortal hands,
The warning sure, to drunkards given,
That such shall not inherit heaven!
