HAIL, Mary, full of grace; the Lord is with Thee: blessed art Thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of Thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen. AVE, Maria, gratia plena; Dominus tecum; benedicta tu in mulieribus, et benedictus fructus ventris tui, Jesus. Sancta Maria, Mater Dei, ora pro nobis peccatoribus, nunc et in hora mortis nostræ. Amen. 136. AVE MARIS STELLA. - THIS is probably the oldest, — it dates from the ninth century, - best-known, most-used, and therefore, most helpful of all the hymns to the Mother of Jesus, which edify the Roman, and scandalise the Protestant, who forgets that if the spirit of the prayer or hymn be instinct with love, there are resources in the Chancery of Heaven for re-addressing petitions that may have been wrongly directed by mistake. HA TAIL, bright Star of ocean, Ever-sinless Virgin, Gate of heavenly rest; Taking that sweet Ave Which from Gabriel came, Break the captive's fetters; All our ills expelling, Show thyself a mother; Hear our prayers through thine. Virgin all excelling, Mildest of the mild, Freed from guilt, preserve us Meek and undefiled; Keep our life all spotless, Make our way secure, Till we find in Jesus Joy for evermore. Through the highest Heaven VE maris stella, A Dei Mater alma, Atque semper virgo, Sumens illud Ave, Virgo singularis, Vitam præsta puram Sit laus Deo Patri Tribus honor unus. 137-FAITH OF OUR FATHERS. THE following Roman Catholic hymn is a kind of defiant war-song, the note of which endears it much to the faithful. (The words in Italics apply to Ireland, and may be substituted for the text below when fitting.) FA AITH of our Fathers! living still, } hearts beat high with joy Whene'er they hear that glorious word: we Faith of our Fathers! Holy Faith! Our Fathers, chained in prisons dark, Faith of our Fathers! Mary's prayers Faith of our Fathers! we will love Faith of our Fathers, etc. TUNE "SWISS AIR." This hymn, with the change of a word or two in the third verse, is used by the American Unitarians as a metrical embodiment of their history and aspirations. 138-ETERNAL FATHER, STRONG TO SAVE. THIS is one of Sir Evelyn Wood's favourites. It was written by the late William Whiting, choirmaster of Winchester College, and is much used at sea; and, when the wind blows hard, by those on land. TERNAL Father, strong to save, ETERNAL the restless wave, Who bidd'st the mighty ocean deep Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee O Christ, Whose voice the waters heard Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee Thus evermore shall rise to Thee Glad hymns of praise from land and sea. Amen. 139.-THE LORD'S SUPPER. GEORGE RAWSON wrote this Communion hymn for the Baptists in 1857. It has been appropriated extensively by other denominations, whose use of it is the best testimony to its helpfulness. Y Christ redeemed, in Christ restored, BY We keep the memory adored And show the death of our dear Lord, His body broken in our stead Until He come. The drops of His dread agony, Until He come. |
