whether I live or die, I may act the part of a man, and find the highest joy in the strictest discharge of my duty, even to my expiring breath. And grant, O merciful Lord, that I may fo live on earth as finally to be received into thy kingdom in heaven, for Jefus Chrift his fake. Amen.

8. For Wife and Children.

O God and Father of my life, whofe goodness

extends to all the children of men, give me thy grace and heavenly benediction, that I may act as the inftrument of thy providence in the care and protection of my wife and children. Grant me fo just a fense of my duty as a husband and a father, that my fobriety and industry, and fear of thee, may fhew them the way to everlafting peace. Thou who art the tender parent of mankind, lead them, I beseech thee, by thy merciful arm, into the paths of righteousness, that brotherly love, and Christian meekness and charity, may be the law of their lives, and the comfort and support of mine. Incline their hearts to induftry, and their hands to labor, that by the honeft sweat of their brows they may think it their greatest happiness to eat the bread of innocency. This I beg, O Lord of mercy, for the fake of Jefus Chrift thy Son, who died upon the

9. For Submiffion to Laws.

O Lord God Almighty, thou tender Father and fovereign protector of mankind, give me, I beseech thee, a right understanding of my duty as a fubject. Teach me to difcern that true liberty is found only in thy service, and a strict obedience to the laws of my country; and let all my fellow-fubjects fo learn their duty, that they may uniformly practice what belongs to their peace and happinefs. Let civil magiftrates discharge their duty with fuch a becoming fortitude and dignity, as may fully answer the wife and righteous purpose for which thou haft ordained their authority. Let no imaginary evils take root in our hearts, and every real grievance be reprefented with fuch decency and humility, fuch judgment and candor, that they be not heightened by any inconfiderate pretence for redrefs. Let equity, humanity, and mercy flow as a ftream from the fountain of juftice, and by mutual benevolence and chriftian charity, render every affliction light. Let rulers and people be vigilant and attentive to the advancement of thy glory, that we may all be rendered acceptable in

10. For Forgiveness of Sins, and Amend

ment.

MOST holy and mighty God, who haft created

all things for the glory of thy facred name, I caft myself down before thy heavenly throne, imploring thy mercy and forgiveness.

I have not

duly glorified thee in the words of my lips, nor justly regarded thy will in the conduct of my life. My fins are without number, and without excufe. Pity me, I beseech thee, according to thine infinite compaffion. Forgive all the profane, foolish, and indecent expreffions that have proceeded out of my mouth, and all the evil which I have done. Cleanfe me from all my fins by the precious blood of Chrift; and renew me by thy good spirit, that may from henceforth ferve thee in newness of life, and walk in the paths of everlasting rest. Mortify my evil affections and follies, and fubdue my irregular paffions and defires. Guard the door of my lips, and guide me by a steadfast faith in the fear and love of thee. Grant me thy grace to triumph over the world, that I may live to thine honor, and die in thy peace. Let my hope, my truft, and my glory be in the cross of Chrift; to

II. For Humility, and a good Life. Father Almighty! have mercy on me a miserable finner! I beseech thee humble my foul in thy prefence! Remove all proud looks, and turn away from me all haughtiness and infolence. Let no vain hopes deceive, nor evil defires pervert my heart; and give me not over unto an impudent mind. Leave me me not to the counsel of finners, and let me not fall into their fnares: set a scourge over my thoughts, that the difcipline of wisdom may rule my heart, and meeknefs of fpirit give reft unto my foul. Let a habit of temperance restrain my appetites, that neither the greediness of the belly, nor the luft of the flesh, nor wrath, nor anger, nor any unchafte or evil defire may prevail against me. Pardon my ignorances and infirmities, and teach me to ferve thee in true faithfulness, and fincerity of heart. This I beg, O Lord of mercy, for the fake of the meek and blessed Redeemer of the world. Amen.

O bleffed Saviour, who didft overcome the fharpnefs of death, and redeemedft me with thy precious blood, let thy mercy lighten upon me, and fo infpire me with humble truft and confidence in thee, that when I fhall finish my days, I may be numbered with thy faints in glory everlasting. This I beg, O Father of mercy, for the fake of the fame Jefus Chrift my Redeemer. Amen.
