To thy temple I repair

[ocr errors]

To whom shall I fly for relief?

Up to the hills I lift mine eyes
Uprising from the darksome tomb

Vain are the hopes the sons of men
Vital spark of heavenly flame-

We are a garden wall'd around -
We bless the Lord, the just, the good
We sing his love who once was slain
We sing the deep mysterious plan
Welcome sweet day of rest
Welcome, welcome, blessed servant-
We'll proclaim the wondrous story-
Well, the Redeemer's gone

What cheering words are these

What creatures beside are favour'd like 272
What different powers of grace and sin- 365
What equal honours shall we bring-
What hath God wrought! might Israel
What shall I render to my God -
What various hindrances we meet
What were Sinai's awful wonders
When blooming youth is snatch'd away 442
When gracious lord, when shall it be
When I can read my title clear

When I survey the wond'rous cross-
When Jesus first at heaven's command.

When on Sinai's top I see

When overwhelm'd with grief

When thou my righteous Judge shall
When with my mind devoutly prest

When two or three together meet 280
When two or three, with sweet accord - 288
Whence do our mournful thoughts arise 313
While with ceaseless course the sun
Who can describe the joys that rise
Why does your face, ye humble souls
Why should I doubt his love at last
Why should the children of a king-
Why will ye lavish out your years-
With all my powers of heart and
With heavenly power, O Lord defend
With humble heart and tongue
With joy we meditate the grace-
With meekness let the saints appear

Ye dying sons of men

Ye hearts, with youthful vigour warm
Ye heavens rejoice in Jesus's grace
Ye humble souls that seek the Lord
Ye servants of God,
your master

Ye that in these courts are found
Ye that obey th' immortal King

Ye virgin souls, arise!

Ye wretched, hungry, starving poor,

Yes, the Redeemer rose

Your harps, ye trembling saints

BLESS'D be the Father, and his love,
To whose celestial source we owe
Rivers of endless joy above,

And rills of comfort here below.

Glory to thee, great Son of God,
From whose dear wounded body rolls,
A precious stream of vital blood,
Pardon and life for dying souls.
We give the sacred Spirit praise,
Who in our hearts of sin and woe,
Makes living springs of grace arise,
And into boundless glory flow.

Thus God the Father, God the Son,
And God the Spirit, we adore,
That sea of life and love unknown,
Without a bottom or a shore.

B

Portsmouth New.

I GIVE immortal praise
To God the Father's love,
For all my comforts here,

And better hopes above:
He sent his own eternal Son,

To die for sins that man had done.
To God the Son belongs

3

Immortal glory too,

Who bought us with his blood,
From everlasting woe:

And now he lives and now he reigns,
And sees the fruit of all his pains.
To God the Spirit's name,
Immortal worship give,
Whose new-creating power

Makes the dead sinner live:

His work completes the great design,
And fills the soul with joy divine.

Almighty God, to thee

Be endless honours done,

The undivided Three,

The great mysterious One:

Where reason fails with all her powers,
There faith prevails, and love adores.

Doxology.

FATHER of glory, to thy name
Immortal praise we give ;

Who dost an act of grace proclaim,
And bid us rebels live.

Immortal honour to the Son,

Who makes thine anger cease ;
Our lives he ransomed with his own,
And died to make our peace.

To the almighty Spirit, be
Immortal glory given,

Whose influence brings us near to thee,
And trains us up for heaven.

Let men, with their united voice,
Adore th' eternal God;

And spread his honours and their joys,
Through nations far abroad.

Let faith, and love, and duty join,
One gen❜ral song to raise;

Let saints in earth and heaven combine

4

In harmony and praise.

Eythorn.

LET them neglect thy glory, Lord,
Who never knew thy grace;
But our loud songs shall still record
The wonders of thy praise.

We raise our shouts, O God, to thee,
And send them to thy throne.;
All glory to th' united Three,
The undivided One.
