66.

I SWEET day, so cool, so calm, so bright,
The bridal of the earth and sky,

The dew shall weep thy fall to-night :
For thou must die.

2 Sweet rose, whose hue, angry and brave,
Makes the rash gazer wipe his eye,
Thy root is ever in its grave,
And thou must die.

3 Sweet Spring, full of sweet days and roses,
A box where sweets compacted lie,
My music shows ye have your closes,
And all must die.

4 Only a sweet and virtuous soul,
Like season'd timber, never gives;
But though the whole world turn to coal,
Then chiefly lives.

67.

I GO when the morning shineth,
Go when the moon is bright,

Go when the day declineth,
Go in the hush of night;
Go with pure mind and feeling,
Fling earthly thoughts away,
And in thy chamber kneeling,
Do thou in secret pray.

2 Remember all who love thee,
All who are loved by thee;
Pray, too, for those who hate thee,
If any such there be ;

Then for thyself, in meekness,

A blessing humbly claim,
And link with each petition
Thy great Redeemer's name.

3 Or if 'tis e'er denied thee
In solitude to pray,

Should holy thoughts come o'er thee
When friends are round thy way;

Even then the silent breathing

Of thy spirit raised above,

Will reach His throne of glory

Who is mercy, truth, and love!

4 Oh! not a joy or blessing

With this we can compare,
The power that He hath given us
To pour our souls in prayer!
Whene'er thou pinest in sadness,
Before His footstool fall,
And remember, in thy gladness,
His grace who gives thee all.

68.

I SPEAK gently! it is better far
To rule by love than fear;

Speak gently! let not harsh words mar
The good we might do here.

2 Speak gently to the little child;
Its love be sure to gain :
Teach it in accents soft and mild;
It may not long remain.

3 Speak gently to the young, for they
Will have enough to bear :

Pass through the world as best they may, 'Tis full of anxious care.

4 Speak gently to the aged one,

Grieve not a careworn heart;
The sands of life are nearly run,
Let such in peace depart.

5 Speak gently! 'tis a little thing
Dropp'd in the heart's deep well;
The good, the joy that it may bring,
Eternity shall tell.

69.

I THE billows swell, the winds are high,
Clouds overcast my wintry sky,

Out of the depths to Thee I call,
My fears are great, my strength is small.

2 O Lord, the pilot's part perform,

And guide and guard me through the storm; Defend me through each threatening ill, Control the waves, say, "Peace, be still!"

3 Amidst the roaring of the sea

My soul still hangs her hopes on Thee;
Thy constant love, Thy faithful care
Is all that saves me from despair.

4 Dangers of every shape and name
Attend the followers of the Lamb,
Who leave the world's deceitful shore,
And leave it to return no more.

5 Though tempest-toss'd, and half a wreck,
My Saviour through the floods I seek :
Let neither winds nor stormy main
Force back my shatter'd hark again.

ESUS, and shall it ever be,

JESU

A mortal man ashamed of Thee! Ashamed of Thee, whom angels praise, Whose glories shine to endless days!

2 Ashamed of Jesus! sooner far

Let evening blush to own a star: He sheds His beam of light divine O'er this benighted soul of mine. 3 Ashamed of Jesus! just as soon Let midnight be ashamed of noon; 'Tis midnight with my soul till He, Bright Morning Star, bids darkness flee. 4 Ashamed of Jesus! that dear friend On whom my hopes of heaven depend! No; when I blush, be this my shame, That I no more revere His name.

5 Ashamed of Jesus! yes, I may,
When I've no guilt to wash away;
No tear to wipe, no good to crave,
No fears to quell, no soul to save.

6 Till then, nor is my boasting vain,
Till then, I boast a Saviour slain :
And oh, may this my glory be,
That Christ is not ashamed of me!

71.

I BEHOLD! a Stranger at the door!
He gently knocks, has knock'd before,
Has waited long, is waiting still;

You treat no other friend so ill.

2 But will He prove a Friend indeed ?
He will! the very Friend you need!
The man of Nazareth, 'tis He,
With garments dyed at Calvary.

3 If thou art poor (and poor thou art),
Lo! He has riches to impart :

Not wealth, in which mean avarice rolls;
O better far! the wealth of souls!

4 Thou'rt blind, He'll break the scales away, And let in everlasting day;

Naked thou art; but He shall dress
Thy blushing soul in Righteousness.
5 Art thou a weeper? Grief shall fly;
For who can weep with Jesus by?
No terror shall thy hopes annoy;
No tear, except the tear of joy.
6 Admit Him, for the human breast
Ne'er entertain'd so kind a guest :
Admit Him, for you can't expel;
Where'er He comes, He comes to dwell.

7 Admit Him, ere His anger burn;
His feet departed, ne'er return :
Admit Him, or the hour's at hand,
When at His door denied you'll stand.

72.

I WALK in the light; so shalt thou know
That fellowship of love

His Spirit only can bestow
Who reigns in light above.

Walk in the light! and sin abhorr'd

Shall ne'er defile again;

The blood of Jesus Christ the Lord

Shall cleanse from every stain.

2 Walk in the light! and thou shalt find
Thy heart made truly His

Who dwells in cloudless light enshrined,
In whom no darkness is.

Walk in the light, and thou shalt own
Thy darkness pass'd away,

Because the light hath on thee shone
In which is perfect day.

3 Walk in the light! and e'en the tomb
No fearful shade shall wear;
Glory shall chase away its gloom,
For Christ hath conquer'd there!
Walk in the light! and thou shalt see
A path, though thorny, bright;
For God by grace shall dwell in thee,
For God Himself is light.

73.

I COME, Holy Spirit, heavenly dove,
My sinful maladies remove;

Be Thou my Light, be Thou my Guide, O'er every thought and step preside. 2 The light of truth to me display,

That I may know and choose my way; Plant holy fear within my heart,

That I from God may ne'er depart.

3 Conduct me safe, conduct me far
From every sin and hurtful snare ;
Lead me to God, my final rest,
In His enjoyment to be blest.

4 Lead me to Christ, the Living Way,
Nor let me from His pastures stray :
Lead me to heaven, the seat of bliss,
Where pleasure in perfection is.

5 Lead me to holiness, the road

That I must take to dwell with God; Lead to Thy Word, that rules must give, And sure directions how to live.

6 Lead me to means of grace, where I

May own my wants, and seek supply: Lead to Thyself, the Spring from whence To fetch all quickening influence.
