57.

I THERE are lonely hearts to cherish,
While the days are going by;

There are weary souls who perish,
While the days are going by:
If a smile we can renew,
As our journey we pursue,
Oh, the good we all may do,
While the days are going by:

Going by!.. Going by!
Going by! Going by!
Oh, the good we all may do,
While the days are going by!

2 There's no time for idle scorning,
While the days are going by;
Let your face be like the morning,
While the days are going by :
Oh, the world is full of sighs,
Full of sad and weeping eyes;
Help your fallen brother rise,
While the days are going by!
3 All the loving links that bind us,
While the days are going by ;
One by one, we leave behind us,
While the days are going by:
But the seeds of good we sow,
Both in shade and shine will grow,
And will set our hearts aglow,
While the days are going by!

58.

I THEY are gathering homeward from ev'ry land,
One by one, one by one!

As their weary feet touch the shining strand,
Yes, one by one!

Their brows are enclosed in a golden crown,

Their travel-stain'd garments are all laid down;
And cloth'd in white raiment they rest in the mead,
Where the Lamb doth love His saints to lead.

Gath'ring home! gath'ring home!
Fording the river one by one!
Gath'ring home! gath'ring home!
Yes, one by one

2 We too shall come to the river side,
One by one, one by one!

We are nearer its waters each eventide,
Yes, one by one!

To some are the floods of the river still,

As they ford on their way to the heavenly hill!
To others the waves run fiercely and wild,
Yet they reach the home of the undefiled.

3 Jesus, Redeemer, we look to Thee,
One by one, one by one!

We lift up our voices tremblingly,

Yes, one by one!

The waves of the river are dark and cold,

But we know the place where our feet shall hold :
O Thou, who didst pass through in deepest midnight,
Now guide us, and send us the staff and light.

59.

I TRUST on! trust on! believer,
Though long the conflict be,

Thou yet shalt prove victorious,
Thy God shall fight for thee.

Trust on!. trust on!.
Though dark the night and drear
Trust on!. trust on!
The Morning dawn is near.
Trust on the danger presses,
Temptation strong is near,
Over life's dangerous rapids

He shall thy passage steer.
The Lord is strong to save us,
He is a faithful Friend:
Trust on! trust on! believer,
Oh, trust Him to the end!

60.

I WE'RE going home, no more to roam,
No more to sin and sorrow;

No more to wear the brow of care:
We're going home to-morrow.

We're going home, we're going home to-morrow;

[ocr errors]

We're going home,

[ocr errors][ocr errors]

we're going home to-morrow.

2 For weary feet awaits a street
Of wondrous pave and golden:
For hearts that ache the angels wake
The Story sweet and olden.

3 For those who sleep, and those who weep,
Above the portals narrow,

The mansions rise beyond the skies:
We're going home to-morrow.

4 Oh, joyful song! oh, ransom'd throng!
Where sin no more shall sever;

Our King to see, and oh, to be
With Him at home for ever!

61.

I WHO, who are these beside the chilly wave,
Just on the borders of the silent grave,

Shouting Jesus' power to save,

"Wash'd in the blood of the Lamb"?

"Sweeping through the gates" of the New Jerusalem,

"Wash'd in the blood of the Lamb."

2 These, these are they who, in their youthful days, Found Jesus early, and in wisdom's ways Proved the fulness of His grace,

"Wash'd in the blood of the Lamb."

3 These, these are they who, in affliction's woes,
Ever have found in Jesus calm repose,

Such as from a pure heart flows,
"Wash'd in the blood of the Lamb."

4 These, these are they who, in the conflict dire,
Boldly have stood amid the hottest fire ;
Jesus now says, "Come up higher!
"Wash'd in the blood of the Lamb."

5 Safe, safe upon the ever-shining shore,
Sin, pain, and death, and sorrow, all are o'er,
Happy now and evermore,

"Wash'd in the blood of the Lamb."

62.

I WHY do you wait, dear brother?
Oh, why do you tarry so long?
Your Saviour is waiting to give you
A place in His sanctified throng.
Why not? Why not?—

Why not come to Him now?

2 What do you hope, dear brother,
To gain by a further delay?
There's no one to save you but Jesus,
There's no other way but His way.

3 Do

you not feel, dear brother,

His Spirit now striving within? Oh, why not accept His salvation, And throw off thy burden of sin? 4 Why do you wait, dear brother? The harvest is passing away; Your Saviour is longing to bless you; There's danger and death in delay.

63.

I WORK, for the night is coming!
Work through the morning hours;
Work while the dew is sparkling,
Work 'mid springing flowers:

2 Work when the day grows brighter,
Work in the glowing sun;
Work, for the night is coming,
When man's work is done.

3 Work, for the night is coming!
Work through the sunny noon :
Fill brightest hours with labour,
Rest comes sure and soon.

4 For Jesus shed His precious blood
Rich blessings to bestow :
Plunge now into the crimson flood
That washes white as snow.

5 Yes, Jesus is the Truth, the Way
That leads you into rest :
Believe in Him without delay,
And you are fully blest.

6 Come then, and join this holy band,
And on to glory go,

To dwell in that celestial land
Where joys immortal flow.

64.

I SPIRIT divine! attend our prayer,
And make this house thy home;
Descend with all thy gracious power,
O come, Great Spirit, come!

2 Come as the light,—to us reveal
Our emptiness and woe;

And lead us in those paths of life
Where all the righteous go.

3 Come as the fire,—and purge our hearts
Like sacrificial flame;

Let our whole souls an offering be
To our Redeemer's name.

4 Come as the dove, and spread Thy wingsThe wings of peaceful love;

And let the Church on earth become
Blest as the Church above.

65.

I THIS world is all a fleeting show,
For man's illusion given;

The smiles of joy, the tears of woe,
Deceitful shine, deceitful flow-

There's nothing true but Heaven!

2 And false the light on Glory's plume,
As fading hues of even;

And Love, and Hope, and Beauty's bloom,
Are blossoms gather'd for the tomb-
There's nothing bright but Heaven!

3 Poor wanderers of a stormy day,
From wave to wave we're driven,
And fancy's flash, and reason's ray
Serve but to light the troubled way—
There's nothing calm but Heaven.
